Hello all,

I'm Dong Tran from Vietnam.I worked as a pediatrician for 5 years
before I got my MSPH in Taiwan last year. And I've practiced meditation
(similar to Master Thich Nhat Hanh's guidance )for many years.

Recently,I'm thinking about pursue PhD study (in US) which emphasis on
meditation or mindfulness research especially in its application to
daily life/treatment.I have searched for numerous programs and most of
them for postdoctoral position (especially only for US citizen or
permanent due to NIH grants). In addition, there are some PhD programs
in clinical psychology or neuroscience which have research in this
field. However,I'm afraid that my background is not strong enough for
their program.Do you know any program or Professor whose works fit to
my background? And would you please give me some advice?

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Dong

I am a retired education professor. I taught at the Univ. of
Wisconsin - Stevens Point for 36 years. A great deal of American
psychology is aware of the power and value of meditation. I suggest
selecting some universities of interest, maybe because of location or
reputation and contacting them about PhD study involving or including
meditation. The usual PhD program would involve other subjects too,
but you would be incouraged to craft a set of courses and maybe
independent studies with faculty and researchers of interest.

Similarily, Dong, I am from Canada and searching for the same type of program. I am looking for EdD or a PhD in Education which emphasizes mindfulness and/or meditation in the arena of education or neuroscience with education -- preservice teachers/ administrators/ teachers.
thanks

It should be possible to even set this up as a trans-university degree, where one or more "central" universities agree to issue the doctorate, on the basis of units undertaken at both that university and advanced standing for "agreed" units completed successfully at other, nominated universities. The overall degree structure would first need to be defined and authorised by the issuing university, but this would then allow greater collaboration between institutions (and individuals), as well as provide for greater choice within the degree...Tony Yeigh (Australia)

You might look into Naropa University. I'm not sure what sort of Ph.D
programs they have, but it's the only accredited Buddhist University
here in the US.

As for places that are offering mindfulness in the area of
education... Teachers College in NY has an administrator program that
emphasizes self-awareness training (aka mindfulness) and I believe
that Harvard is now offering something in the area of mindfulness as
well, or at least some of their professors are studying mindfulness in
education.

best of luck,
Andra

You may want to consider Richard Davidson's Ph.D. program at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
This link should get you started on the right track. They are doing research into the benefits of meditation on children.
He also has some short youtube videos talking about the adolescent brain.

Hello, Mindfulness Colleagues-
I know many of you have found the music of the Calm Down Boogie CD, to be a useful resource in your work with children. Music truly is a pathway to both individual and group "harmony", and it sticks wonderfully to the mind and heart, so that simple songs that express the teachings and practices stay with us over time. (You know how it is to get a song stuck in your brain!).

So I'm very excited to finally have up on Youtube a wonderful video of my Mindful Music programs , featuring two Bay Area elementary schools, with lively scenes of children singing, moving, talking to the camera about their mindfulness practices, plus testimonials from teachers and principals on the impact of Mindfulness, and the music, on their school community. I hope you'll take a look- it will put a smile on your face, and maybe a reminder of the beauty and value of what we are offering to young people.      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iF7J2zlvtI

For those of you who want to incorporate music more into your Mindfulness work with youth and educators, I have a training for teachers that I hope to offer online later in 2012. In the meanwhile, there is a page on my website with mp3's of simple songs not on Calm Down Boogie, that can be used to gather a group, and begin Mindfulness sessions; handouts from the current version of the workshop, and a teachers guidebook for using Calm Down Boogie in the classroom. All of this is there for you and I invite you to visit that area of my website- lots of info, song clips,  program info and more. http://www.betsyrosemusic.org/programs/for-educators

We are all such resources for each other! I value this network greatly, and appreciate all the innovative work going on around the globe.

With respect and appreciation-
 Betsy

I am also interested in an PhD in Education with emphasis on Meditation at Canada. I found that UBC and UToronto has some of it's professors doing research on meditation. But, there is no fully structured degree with meditation specialization, which is recognized by CPA or/ and APA. I request you to let me know, if you find any information regarding this type of degree.
Thank you !

HI
Lesley University in Boston is starting a Masters in Mindfulness program  that is starting in the Fall. I believe it is the only program of its kind in the academic circles. I believe the format is attending onsite for a week in the summer and the rest can be done either in person on site or on line. I think they are setting up the ability to attend classes in real time remotely along with online discussion board forums. http://www.lesley.edu/master-of-arts/mindfulness-studies/   This is the link to their program and then click the green button that says "program of study" to get the specific classes included in the program.  Maybe this will lead to them creating a PHD program.

Have you tried looking at Harvard, I know there is a professor there who specializes in this area.
