Regarding installation from the run file. The "*" in that denotes the version so if you downloaded. 1 thing you need to consider: the version you type is the 32-bit version. If you need the 64-bit version you need xampp-linux-x64-5.6.3-0-installer.run.
If you have upgraded to Windows 10, are unable to login because you cannot restart Apache in xampp control and xampp control gives an error message that port 80 is being used by another application; that application, IIS, will need to be disabled. Follow this tutorial and clear the box next to "Internet Information Services" (IIS).
If anything goes wrong, and you followed these instructions correctly, you can easily restore the original MySQL by simply shutdown XAMPP and renaming xampp/MySQL to xampp/mariadb and xampp/mysql.old to xampp/mysql to put everything back as it was before.
If you prefer to troubleshoot your issue, you may find more information on the problem by viewing the MySQL error log, either by clicking the Logs button for MySQL in the XAMPP Control Panel, or by opening the following file in a text editor: xampp\mysql\data\mysql_error.log
