We hope you are all doing well! The next talk of our seminar series takes place on Wednesday. If you would like to join the session, simply follow the link below shortly before the meeting. In case you have not joined any of the previous sessions, please have a look at the section "Further information on how to join" attached at the end of this email.

"In Search of a Physical Foundation for Biological Mentality"

Link to join meeting: https://www.gotomeet.me/basic-researchAbstract: I am not happy with any of the many mind-matter theories out there, and I'm trying to broaden the search space for a better theory that would satisfy the highlighted text below plus be experimentally falsifiable. I offer some first steps in that direction.
"Selection for physical reproductive fitness may have resulted in the appearance of organisms that are in fact conscious, but there is no physical explanation of why this is so - nor any other kind of explanation that we know of. To make facts of this kind intelligible, a postmaterialistic theory would have to offer a unified explanation of how the physical and the mental characteristics of organisms developed together, and it would have to do so not just by adding a clause to the effect that the mental comes along with the physical as a bonus." (Mind & Cosmos, Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False, Thomas Nagel, p.45)
Also, we would like to announce the subsequent talk by Michael Silberstein:

We are very much looking forward to both talks and to seeing many of you again!

We will be online from 17:00 CEST on and the talk will start at 17:30 promptly. Please login by 17:15 as logging in for the first time typically takes some time.
To make sure that everything goes smoothly, please read the following information before the talk.
1.) If you own a headset or headphones with included microphone,
please use it during the meeting. This significantly improves the
quality of discussions since the algorithms will do better in
separating your voice from the environment (which is a non-trivial
task with many participants in the meeting).
2.) If you have not yet done so, please check your system
compatibility by following this link.
3.) In case you are running Linux on your machine, you have to use
Chrome/Chromium as a browser (GotoMeeting does not work with other
browsers).
4.) In case of unexpected connection problems, you can use your
phone to connect. Phone numbers and the necessary access code can
be found below.
5.) Apart from ensuring a reasonable internet connection, also
closing other applications on one's machine often significantly
increases the quality.
