My Beloved,

A covetous man marries one woman and soon begins to wish he had married a different one entirely. The woman who would have satisfied him is just the one that he did not marry.

Covetousness is at the very root of the sin of comparison, and can lead to bitter consequences. A woman once told her husband, "Those who started work with you at the same time are all riding big cars. You have gone nowhere. I am here doomed to mud eternally." The man wanted to be like the other men. He stole money in order to buy a big car and landed in prison.

Because of comparison and covetousness, many people carry wounds that are caused by many unfulfilled desires.

The harm to themselves is enormous; for they are restless and unfulfilled. They miss the Lord completely and all that they will receive for their apparent labours will be many stripes. Comparison leads to jealousy, strife and division.

My beloved,

Because of comparison and covetousness, many people carry wounds that are caused by many unfulfilled desires. One thing that is prevalent among fallen people is the sin of comparison. Much heart-ache, bitterness, frustration and the like are caused by this sin.

The covetous will always be striving after one thing or another. As they strive, they will know increasing worry. They may want clothes and have them. Then they want a new car and after the car they might want a house and then another thing. On and on, they will plunge into the search of things that can never satisfy. If it is money they want, they will initially want to acquire a certain sum. When that sum of money has been acquired, it will cease to satisfy. They will then set a new goal which, when attained, will still leave them empty. However, they will still set a new goal and so on. They will never know satisfaction in their lives and they will spend all their lives striving after wind.

Covetousness leads to many wounds. First of all, the covetous are never satisfied. Since they are always comparing what they have with what others have, they are never satisfied. They will always find someone who has more than they do, or who has something better than what they have. They will always find someone who is their better. They will, therefore, never know rest.

Someone buys a big car. You have a small car. You covet his car and begin to pray that God should give you a big car. You may amass all the reasons that you can to impress upon the Lord that you need the car for His glory, but if you would be honest, you will acknowledge that you are not seeking God's glory but yours.
