server setup and configuration

This is my setup, and it is still in the early stages of configuration, so I can redo and move things around.  My main goal is to have access to a 24-terabyte drive over the network and to back up to it simultaneously.

proxmox server

 - VM for open media vault(OMV)

 - VM for Minarca

 - VM for LLM and Docker containers

 - LXC for birdbox

I have a 24 TB and 2 X 8 TB drives. I have configured OMV to share the drives.

Can Samba be set up on the Minarca VM to share the 24 TB drive, or can I configure Minarca repositories to point to the OMV share?

Figure it out, I think.  I am going to mount the Samba/OMV share to the backup directory and hope the cifs-utils does not break anything inside the minarca install on the server.

Hello Ken,

You may configure Minarca in many different way and no configuration a better or worst, it all depends on your needs.

That said, if you intend to backup a lot of stuff (read more than 1TB) in Minarca, I would clearly recommend using a LXC instead of a VM for Minarca to make better use of the direct storage. This way Minarca benefits from ZFS capabilities like compression, snapshot, metadata caching, etc.

I would not recommend a bind mount using Samba for Minarca. It's known to be unstable because of all the strange behaviour in samba: case-sensitive, lock access, filename encoding, etc. If you really want to bind mount, make sure to use NFS.
