உதயதாரகை (Morning Star) was the first Tamil newspaper in the world.
The newspaper, first published in 1841, was founded by two young Tamil missionaries, Henry Martin and Seth Payson, who were working for the American Mission based in Manipay, a northern district of Jaffna in Sri Lanka.

While it started as a bilingual fortnightly publication with Tamil and English articles, it became a weekly Tamil-only newspaper in 1856. The newspaper, donated by Mr John Koh, covered a wide range of topics, such as education, science, literature, agriculture, government and religion. It also provided a condensed version of important news. The National Library holds 24 issues of Morning Star, from Volume 8, Number 1, published on January 14, 1847 to Volume 8, Number 24, published on December 23, 1847

தமிழ்நாட்டில் 1831-இல் முதல் தமிழ் இதழாக 'கிறித்தவ சமயம்'வெளிவந்தது.பிறகு,1853-ஆம் ஆண்டில் தின வர்த்தமானி என்னும் தமிழ் வார இதழ் வெளியானது.கி.பி.1870-க்குப் பின்னர், சென்னை மாகாணத்தில் தமிழ் மற்றும் ஆங்கில மொழிகளில் பல்வேறு நாள்,வார,மாத இதழ்கள் வெளிவர தொடங்கின.

உதயதாரகை (Morning Star) ஈழத்தின் முதலாவது தமிழ்ப் பத்திரிகையும், யாழ்ப்பாணத்தின் முதலாவது செய்திப் பத்திரிகையும் ஆகும்.[1] ஆகும். இது 1841 இல் அமெரிக்க இலங்கை மிசன் மூலம் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. இப் பத்திரிகை தமிழில் உதயதாரகை என்றும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் Morning Star என்றும் இருமொழிப் பத்திரிகையாகவே வெளிவந்தது. தொடக்கத்தில் மாதம் இருமுறை வெளியிடப்பட்ட இது பின்னர் வாரத்துக்கு ஒரு முறை தெல்லிப்பழையில் அச்சிட்டு வெளிவந்தது.

The first Tamil newspaper in the world named “Morning star” was published in Jaffna in 1841. Mr. Henry Martin as its editor became the first native journalist in Sri Lanka. Some other newspapers were also published in Jaffna in those days, they were Patriot, Jaffna Freeman and Literary Mirror.

Catholic Guardian and Hindu Organ were started in 1876.

*“Eelakesari” a Tamil weekly published in Jaffna between 1931-1956 period* had subscribers in India, Malaysia, South Africa, Fiji and Mauritius where there are sizable Tamil population.

தமிழில் தோன்றிய முதல் தமிழ்ப் பத்திரிகையின் பெயர்  "தமிழ் இதழ்" என்பதாகும்! கிறிஸ்துவ மத சங்கத்தார் இப்பத்திரிகையை சென்னையில் 1831ஆம் ஆண்டு தோற்றுவித்தார்கள்!

தமிழில் தோன்றிய முதல் வாரப்பத்திரிகையின் பெயர்  "தினவர்த்தினி" என்பதாகும்! இது 1856ஆம் ஆண்டு அரசு கல்வி இலாகாவால் தொடங்கப்பட்டது! 

தமிழில் தோன்றிய முதல் தமிழ் மாத இதழின் பெயர்  "ஜனவினோதினி" என்பதாகும்! இதுவும் அரசு கல்வி இலாகாவால் 1870ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது! 

சென்னையில்  முதன் முதலில் இந்தியர் ஒருவரால் ஆரம்பக்கப்பட்ட பத்திரிகை  "தி இந்து" ஆகும்! இச்செய்தித்தாள் 1878ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் வெளிவருகிறது! 1857ஆம் ஆண்டு வரை இந்தியப் பத்திரிகைகளில் இலக்கியம், மதம், சமூக நலம், சீர்திருத்தம் பற்றிய செய்திகளும் கட்டுரைகளும் இடம் பெற்றன. அரசியல் செய்தி ஒன்று கூட இடம் பெறவில்லை. 1857ஆம் ஆண்டுக்குப் பிறகே அரசியல் செய்திகள் அதிகம் வரத்தொடங்கின!
