Dear friends, I read with interest the notings about ARPillai. It may be worth mentioning here that one Mr Orsay M. Gopalakichanane, an engineer hailing from Pondicherry and settled in France, has been doing great work in bringing out the omitted portions of the diaries. He has recently published the noting of the three eventful years of Pillai, `prajorpathi' (1751-52), `angirsa' (1752-53), and `srimuga' (1753-54), having transcribed them meticulously. (These were not noticed even till Gopal brought them out) This new edition will be of great help to researchers and writers on history. In fact I have been assisted by Gopal to an extent. He was here in Chennai recently and I was amazed to see his transcription of Pillai's diaries so painstakingly done. As far as I understand Pillai's family spoke Telugu at home In addition there is yet another member of the family who noted daily occurances in his diaries. Dhanappa Mudali, who was converted and given the name Lazarus Timothy was yet another Dubashi, of the French, who is the only one rememberd by a stone in St. Mary's church in the fort in a Tamil inscription. Incidentally this is the ONLY tamil stone and a catholic stone in an anglican church. I am marking a copy of this to Mr Gopalakichnane. Narasiah |
