Saya mungkin bukan kencan, ciuman atau, cinta yang pertama, tapi saya ingin menjadi yang terakhir.
I may not be your first date, kiss, or love, but I want to be your last.
When the Indonesian film Arisan! came out in 2003, critics praised it for its positive depiction of a same-sex relationship. Directed by Nia Dinata and written by Joko Anwar, the film featured the first on-screen kiss between two gay male characters in Indonesian cinema.
It marks the first feature written by future auteur Joko Anwar, and it reflects his interest in making films that probe the gritty realities of Indonesian society, such as dealing with homosexuality in a socially conservative country. But it also captured a unique and fleeting moment in time, when state control over media and society had relaxed sufficiently that a blockbuster could openly explore themes of homosexuality, but before the rise of Islamic conservatism effectively stamped out such films in contemporary Indonesia.
"Falling in Love" is nothing if not upfront about its intentions. It wants to be a 1940s romance, and it makes that bountifully clear by making the first encounter between the characters a "Meet Cute." "Meet Cutes" are what Hollywood calls those clichéd scenes where Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant are both leaving Macy's at the same time; they run into each other, drop their packages, and bump heads as they awkwardly bend over to pick them up. Would you believe that is exactly how the "Meet Cute" works in this movie? De Niro and Streep are at a bookstore, not a department store, but as their packages drop, the movie almost could use a subtitle with the cross-reference to other films.
In Curiosity,
Lucas tries to find Eliott on social media, but has no luck with only a first name. At school he looks for Eliott's name in the class notebook and is successful. Lucas googles him and finds a project that Eliott had been raising money for called Polaris. At home Lucas watches Eliott's video and learns that the project is a film about two people who fall in love and have to conquer their fears to be together.
In The boy who was afraid of the dark,
When Manon asks Lucas who Eliott is he tells her that he is a friend, and that they aren't very close. At school Daphné tells Emma and Lucas that Eliott will be painting the mural in the common room, and Lucas offers to help. When it's time to repaint the mural Lucas waits for Eliott in the common room but he never shows up. When the Crew come into the common room they ask why they haven't started the mural and he tells them to ask Eliott.
Eliott comes over to Lucas and Chloé to apologize for not showing up to paint the mural, and invites him over for a drink at him place to make up for it. Chloé interrupts to tell him that they have a date planned and suggests they make it a double date with him and Lucille. During the date Lucille tries to stop Eliott from drinking and he snaps at her. Upset, she leaves the room and Chloé follows to comfort her. While they're gone Eliott apologizes to Lucas and tells him that he was hoping that it would be just the two of them, to which Lucas agrees. Eliott suggests that they leave while the girls are distracted and the two of them sneak out of the apartment.
Eliott brings Lucas through the woods to his favorite spot, his refuge. He tells Lucas that it's where he goes when he wants to be alone, and Lucas jokes that he brings people to the place he goes to be alone. Eliott tells him that he's the first person he's brought here, including Lucille, because he's special. They get to the bridge. Seeing the bridge, Lucas is reminded of Eliott's polaris video and he's awestruck that Eliott would bring him to his romantic fantasy. Eliott invites him underside the bridge which in his words is his place/home. He shows Lucas the graffiti, and Lucas tells him that he likes it. Eliott starts asking if Lucas is scared, and turning the flashlight on and off. Lucas tells him that he's not but eventually admits to being a little scared. Soon, it starts to rain and Eliott leaves the coverage of the bridge to stand in the rain. Lucas goes to the edge of the bridge and they reenact the scene from Eliott's film where the two lovers conquer their fears and enter the others world to be together. They make eye contact, then kiss.
In At the same time, in another universe,
Lucas and Eliott sleep at Lucas's flatshare for the night, and spend most of the night talking. Lucas asks what Eliott thought the first time he saw him in the common room, and Eliott tells him that the first time he saw him was on his first day of school. They discuss the possibility of alternate universes and what the other versions of them would be doing. Eliott gets a call from Lucille and says that Eliott number 452 can go talk to her because he is staying with Lucas. Lucas jokes that Lucas number 1 is very happy with that decision and the two fall asleep. When Lucas wakes up Eliott is gone and he has left a drawing of a raccoon and a hedgehog in bed together, with the caption "Eliott number 3546 is one hell of a lucky guy. You look beautiful when you're asleep." When he leaves his room Manon and Mika say that they met Eliott when he was leaving and he seems like a cool guy. Lucas tells them that he's just a friend who slept over because he was drunk.
Eliott doesn't show up to school for most of the week, so Lucas goes looking for him. He asks Alex if he's seen him but Alex said that he freaked out in class and hasn't shown up to school since. While Lucas is taking a biology test, Eliott shows up outside of his classroom and he hands in the test early to meet him. Eliott tells him that he told Lucille that he wants to be with Lucas and they broke up. He asks Lucas if he'd tell his parents that they're together and Lucas says that he will. He proceeds to tell Eliott that his dad wouldn't care and his mother is crazy so he doesn't talk to her. Eliott asks about his mother and Lucas tells him that she thinks it's the apocalypse and she's been sent to save humanity, so he doesn't talk to her because he doesn't want crazy people in his life. When Lucas goes to kiss Eliott, he avoids it and and walks away. At home, Lucas opens up to Mika about he and Eliott's relationship, but says some offensive things about the LGBT community and upsets Mika. He texts Eliott to say that he came out to his roommate and Eliott responds saying that he's happy for him, but their relationship is moving too fast and he needs some time. He says it's not Lucas's fault and that he's sorry, effectively breaking up with him.
Friday night the Gang convinces Lucas to go to Chloé's party even though she hates him right now. When they get there Lucas sees Eliott, he tries to get to him but finds him talking to Lucille. Chloé sees him and tells him he isn't welcome, he tries to apologize to her for leaving the double date with Eliott but she interrupts him saying that she's not upset about that, she's upset because he led her on even though he's gay. He tries to deny it which makes her even more upset and she walks away from the conversation. Lucas goes to leave and gets into a fight with his friends, as he's leaving the party he sees Eliott kissing Lucille outside. Lucas is heartbroken by this and has a melt down as he's walking home.
Manon, Lisa and Lucas are all sitting in the living room. Lucas is quite upset at how things are going and after coming out to Yann and him going away without saying anything. He has reached his breaking point. When Mika brings a crumpled drawing that Eliott gave to Lucas asking if he is the hedgehog in the picture. Lucas gets defensive and tells him to grow up. Mika asks Manon for an intervention as they can both see how upset Lucas is. They ask Lucas what is wrong with him. Firstly he denies but then he lets it all out. Mika and Manon both are very supportive. And help him come to terms with his sexuality.
Next day at school, Lucas goes to Basille and Arthur and they both keep hinting that they know he's gay and try to be very supportive when Daphne comes running and flat out asks him if he's gay. He admits that he is and she squeals with excitement and hugs him. Arthur and Basille are also happy for him. After Daphne's gone, Basille ball tags Lucas and runs away.
Lucas, Arthur and Basille are playing table football in the common room when Yann comes. Arthur and Basille make an excuse to leave them alone and go away. Yann and Lucas have a heart to heart where Yann tells him that he has no problem with Lucas being gay instead he was upset with him apparently being the last person to find out that Lucas was gay despite being his best friend. He also apologizes and so does Lucas. Then they hug it out, without ambiguity. Yann asks Lucas about Eliott and he tells him that they were supposed to paint the mural together. Yann suggests that they do it together instead, with Arthur and Basille of course.
Lucas and Imane also have a conversation where Imane subtly apologizes to him but when Lucas says so she tells him to not be so cocky signalling that things were okay between them.
After his class, Lucas comes out to see Chloe standing. He goes to her and she starts going away. He stops her and tries to apologize to her for his behavior and tells her that she was right that he did use her. He also says that it did not work with girls for him. Chloe also apologizes that in revenge for what he did to her she told people that he was gay, which is essentially how the whole school found out. Lucas tells her that it was okay if she hadn't done that he wouldn't have come out, at least not this soon. They both apologize and say that they would see each other around.
Le gang is in the common room, thinking of ideas to paint over the mural. Lucas tells them upon asking that Eliott left a drawing for him in his bag. The boys tell him to text Eliott because being kept hanging like this was unfair. Lucas texts him to which he responds that he wants to talk to him. When Lucas replies that he's busy in the common room with the mural he says that he's coming there. He tells the boys and they run out. Soon after Eliott comes to the common room asking if he needs a hand. They talk a bit. Seeing Lucas smiling Eliott says that he missed it. Lucas tells him that it's good that Lucille and him are talking again when Eliott tells him that it doesn't matter because ever since he met Lucas, he has been the only person that mattered to him. Lucas is shook by that. They paint the wall a bit trying to go Jackson Pollock all over it. They are happy and carefree and are soon paint fighting. In a moment of passion, Lucas kisses Eliott and then they are together. With paint all over their bodies they make love for the first time in the common room.
