to Manners In Minutes Dog Training: Using the Q-collar
Oh Ken
I am so glad to read this about Smudge. He is one special dog. I
work with so many dogs that he and Londyn trained as puppies. On Sat.
a really nice couple came to pick up Bella. She did great and so did
they. It was a great lesson.
Ray, Bella's new dad, has competed in obedience and tracking and is
thinking he may want to get back into it with Bella. When I learned
that, I wanted to make sure that he did not start training this puppy
like he did his Giant Schnauzer, so I got Sam to use as a demo dog.
Bella was really worried about Sam from the minute she entered the
room. I did some desensitizing, relaxation exercises and we did the
Tip exercise as well. I then tied Bella to a heavy weight and when
she got worried, took her down. While Bella was down, I called Sam
over to me and told her to Down. She did and I let Bella approach and
sniff the big dog. Finally Bella realized that she had nothing to
worry about and she was fine. Sam was so very impressive and could
not have done any better.
When I finished, I sat back in my wheelchair and we talked. I told
them that Sam had been horrible when I got her as a stray. But thanks
to Londyn (who they were in love with) and a great dog named Smudge,
Sam learned some very hard lessons concerning the importance of
respect, calmness and good manners in this pack.
To this day, Sam will correct the herders, the sporting dogs and the
hounds. She is too fast and agile for the toys and the nonsporting.
She does not like the working dogs but she is absolutely 100%
respectful of the higher functioning terriers. Smudge did an amazing
job of calming this girl down. And for that reason, Sam could easily
be placed as a service dog just as long as the person does not have a
cat!
For that reason, I will probably keep Sam right where she is.
Ken, please give that boy a hug and please say "Hi" to Marilyn as
well. And I am glad he is makiing adjustments, Smudge does not
approve of change.
Later
