Wanted to comment on Cassidy, Janis Moore's beautiful fox terrier gracing the cover of the Mile High Dog December 2010/January 2011 issue that arrived in my mailbox a few weeks back. She is sporting a stunning blue diva collar with lots of bling and against a background of colored Christmas tree lights. A stunning photo of Cassidy and the photographer captured her perfect with his camera. I can certainly see why Janis loves her she is the total package!

Karin, whomever was supposed to proofread the copy for the squib about the cover of the magazine didn’t do a very good job.  Cassidy is a LAKELAND Terrier (boy, is she a Lakie—in the very best way!)

As I’m sure you already know, Janis as been involved in Fox Terrier Rescue since practically forever, and the person who wrote the bit about the cover made a leap of faith in assuming that Cassie was one too.

If you ever have a chance to meet Cassidy in person, you should take it.  You’re unlikely ever to find a more charming, intelligent and engaging little dog and Janis is doing a great job with her.  I’m lucky—we get to see Janis’s dogs almost every week and it’s a real joy.

Oh Lord she is a Lakeland Terrier! Let's hope Cassie doesn't catch wind that she has been called a Fox Terrier as I don't think Miss Cassidy misses much! I'm sure Janice will be more forgiving of the error then Cassie might be. But I still stand by the diva part!

Hi Karin, good to hear from you. Thanks for the great comments on
Cassidy. It is unfortunate that I was not able to proof read the info
inside the magazine. I had given them a wonderful short, and well
written brief on Lakelands that Pat had contributed to. The collar is
a diva's wish come true (:

The magazine may be using some of the other photos of Cassie in future
issues, as background to some of the events.

Holly is and has been great support for rescue and myself and Cassidy.
It has been nice to have the time with her. Sometime you should come
to one of our MIM classes we hold on various Sunday afternoons.

We have great fun, Bonnie joins us when she can. We have rescue dogs
attending. Holly brings her Wire, Lady and Petie when the time allows.
We would enjoy having you and Cassidy could show off her tricks (:

Hi Karin

I am very sorry for not responding before now. There has been so much
going on that I have not been doing much "exploring."

There are some wonderful people to be found here. Many have trained
their dogs using this method and some of the brave ones actually go
out and teach it. I always get very excited when a group of them gets
together to practice. That group in Denver, not only is working
together to keep their own dogs sharp, they are beginning to allow
others to join them.

I smile, because one of these days they will find themselves with a
real following of students. I believe that when we have something
really good, it is even better when we share that thing with others.
Cassie was born at Lynn's home. Lynn shared her with me and I shared
her with Janis. Once the two were bonded, Janis began sharing
Cassie.

Now Janis and that little hairy dog are out touching lives on a
regular basis. That is the value, advantage and the power of having a
respectful, trusting relationship with a good dog.

It is always best to teach by example and that is why that class is so
much fun. It is ok to sometimes stumble and struggle because there
are also those times when we can shine. The results are a wonderful,
human balance and as long as things are moving in a positive
direction, it is ok.

One of the temptations when you have some success is that it is easy
to skip some steps. So when you go to that class and decide to stay
and play, make sure with your breed that pre-conditioning, handling
and accountability become priorities. Hounds really don't care about
compliance, that is why they are so good at their jobs BUT it is a
pain in the neck when you are trying to do performance events.

Karin, I look forward to progress reports as well as lots of funny
stories.

Later

Pat

Karin, that would be fun. The next class is on January 9th, Noon to
2:00 PM.

I will not be there as I entered Maggie in the Poodle Club agility
trial that weekend. Holly, Bonnie, and Judy will be there.

We rent the training center from Helen Philips, at the Ewe R Here
Farm, 96th and Indiana. If you need an exact address I will get it for
you, or Holly might have it.

The next meeting is January 30th, with myself, Holly, Judy and
Suzanne, same place and time.

How fun, I think you will really enjoy the program and the training
center. It is on Helen's farm, she just put in a brand new rubber
floor. Beautiful view of the mountains, there are horses right across
the training center, well cared for. Just nice place to be.

If you give us a bit of background on the Dachshund you are bringing,
we can set ourselves up to provide you and the dog with an appropriate
first learning experience. We train and have fun. The dogs all feel
valued and part of a pack.

I had a mini Dachshund rescue with lots of fear issues that I worked
with, Louie. He came through the program trusting his new owner and
letting the fears go.

Looking forward to seeing you. Having someone with your background in
your breed will certainly add to the training once you get an
opportunity to watch us work our dogs.

We usually try to meet up 2-3 times a month. This is a short month
because of the Holidays and the training center has been reserved for
the 23rd. by another group.

I will add you to our electronic list and keep you in the loop each
month.

Karin, of course it would be GREAT fun to have you come. Drag Mark
along too! Holly's Eric comes sometimes so he wouldn't be the only
guy:)

Pat, if a couple of folks really wanted to take "the bull by the
horns", there would be an explosion of training, MIM style, in this
area. It would be quite a formidable resonsibility, that I think all
of us are aware of, so we have really just kept these sessions
informal and fun. It has been interesting to see the improvement over
time with various dogs. Annie, the Welsh, has made remarkable strides
since she was rehomed with Judy and Lady has done the same with
Holly's guidance. You don't realize the difference until you see them
a few weeks later, but it is so evident. Even Helen herself peeked in
last week and asked "what the hanging rope was for"........I explained
to her the double line method and circle of activity, briefly, but I
don't think she was interested, unfortunately.

Adding a Dachshund to the mix would be just swell, I think. Karin,
it's not terribly far from Ft. Collins; right off the Superior exit by
about five minutes. The only non terriers are my dog and Suzanne's dog
and, of course, Maggie. There are some tie out areas along the walls
that have come in handy and we always recommend bringing a crate, if
needed. We'd love to see you.
Bonnie
