Great news—we’re ready to start moving the Manners In Minutes
GoogleGroup members to our new home at Yahoo!
Apologies in advance for the length of this posting, but there are
lots of details about how it’s going to work and how to get set up on
the new forum. Please hang in there with me.
HERE’S HOW IT’S GOING TO WORK
1. We’ll issue an invitation to the new Yahoo group for every email
address we currently have in the GoogleGroup members list. We can
only send 50 invitations a day, so this process will take at least 5
days.
2. Everyone should continue to post as usual here on Google until
Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14th) so everyone will have time to get signed
up at Yahoo.
3. On Valentine’s Day, the GoogleGroups forum will be shut down to new
postings. You’ll still be able to read the threads that are here as
long as Google keeps the group capability. We’ll transfer over the
currently active Google threads to the Yahoo Forum, pasted into a new
Yahoo posting, and once you’re a member of the new forum, you can
continue those threads almost as if nothing changed.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO JOIN THE MIM DOG TRAINING FORUM AT YAHOO
1. A Yahoo Profile name and password. If you already have one, you’re
almost set to go and you can skip to #2. If you need to get one, go
here:
http://www.yahoo.com/
Click on the “Sign Up” link at the top right of the page. Fill out
the form, and choose a Yahoo Profile name, which will also give you a
Yahoo email account Don’t fret over that email address--you’ll never
HAVE to use it, you only need to remember your new Profile name and
password. Enter your “regular” email address in the third section of
the form, and party on!
Do remember to write down the profile name and password where you can
find it again--you’ll need that in the future if you want to go
directly to the Yahoo Forum site to look at documents or pictures.
2. When you get your email invitation to join the new group, click on
the link in the email and follow the directions to log in with your
Yahoo Profile and password.
3. If you just can’t wait for that invitation, go to this URL and
you’ll be ahead of the game:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/MIM_Dog_Training/
Click on one of the blue “Join This Group” buttons on the right side
of the page. The form will ask you to write something about
yourself. Just put in your name (and a short description if you want)
so we can recognize you as one of the folks from the Google forum.
I’ll do my best to approve your request ASAP.
If you’ve been lurking on the GoogleGroups forum and aren’t an
official member of the group, you’re welcome at Yahoo, too. Just ask
to join the group, and give us some background about why you’re
interested in Manners In Minutes. Identifying yourself as a former
lurker would be helpful, too.
4. When you’re signed up, you can choose how you’re going to receive
the forum messages—individual emails, daily digests, or go-to-the-
forum-web-page, just like the old GoogleGroups forum.
HERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES ABOUT THE YAHOO MIM DOG TRAINING FORUM
The biggest difference you’ll notice at the new Yahoo MIM Dog Training
forum is that you can’t view the content on the group site unless
you’re a member of the group and are signed in. If you choose to get
individual emails or daily digests of the forum activity, they’ll
continue come to your email just like they always have, but you'll
have to log in to the forum to read files and look at pictures.
Any member of the Yahoo group can post files and pictures. One of the
greatest differences is that Yahoo automatically resizes your pictures
for you when you upload them. You don't have to do a thing!.
For a little while yet, you will be able to look at pictures and files
on the GoogleGroups site, but those documents will disappear in the
near future. That was the main reason we decided to move.
Thanks to Linda H and Ken K, we’ve been working away for the last
month or so to copy over a whole slew of important threads, and ALL of
the pictures from the GoogleGroups forum. A big round of applause is
in order for Linda and Ken!!!!!
The email threads are now in files, organized by topic in folders.
Some of these files are all cleaned up (copying from Google brings a
LOT of extra stuff along with it that needs to be pruned out, but all
the good questions and advice are in there. We’ll continue to work on
cleaning up more files after we get moved. There’s an enormous amount
of information in these documents—it’s almost like a Manners In
Minutes Library.
We think you’ll like the way pictures are arranged in folders named
for the person who contributed them—that’s lots easier than just a
list of picture names if you’re looking for one in particular.
PLEASE DON’T WAIT TO GET SIGNED UP AT THE NEW YAHOO GROUP
It will make the process much smoother for everyone if you sign up at
Yahoo before Valentine’s Day. It’s going to be a LOT of work to copy
over the active threads on February 14th, edit out all the “google
noise,” and get things pasted into new threads at Yahoo so the forum
continues along as usual. It will be VERY difficult (or maybe even
impossible) to get that done if we’re also fielding gobs of requests
to join the Yahoo forum at the same time.
So please help, and sign up at Yahoo as soon as you receive your
invitation…or NOW if you’re really rarin’ to go.
Like Pat always says, “Now we’re REALLY going to have some fun!”
Holly
PS—Set a bookmark in your browser for the new Forum site, so you don’t
have to go through extra web pages at Yahoo to get to it.
