Ok ive tried out express scribe version 4.05 and version 4.23 (or whatever the latest version is) We have a file that has been tried on 3 different computers and all three work fine but it still wont play on this girls computer. I have went to the link in other posts and got the dss32.exe file and it still doesnt fix it. Also we have tried the K-lite codec file and it doesnt work either. Also we cant convert the file to MP3 because it doesnt recognize the .dss file type either. Any other suggestions other than reinstalling windows?
We have tried to get help from the support team, but did not get much... We are trying to gather users facing the same kind of problem in order to ask the NCH teams to take our problem in consideration...
I also cannot get DSS files to play with Express Scribe on one computer -- the one that has Windows ME. The same DSS files play just fine on my Windows XP computer. The files display but won't load, they look like they have 00:00 duration.
Twice I have had a DSS file not load on my Windows XP computer. When that happened, I was able to use Philips Speech Exec Software (came with the recorder) to convert the file to a WAV file and Express Scribe was able to load and play the WAV file on the Windows XP computer. Unfortunately, the Windows ME computer cannot play that WAV file, it says it does not have the right codec. I have tried opening the WAV file with Windows Media Player, but it gives the error message "Class Not Registered."
I tried loading the Philips software onto the Windows ME computer thinking the same thing you did, that the software would also load the codec, but alas the Philips software won't install with ME. I spent the day downloading codecs from free-codecs.com onto the Win ME computer but nothing has worked so far. Thanks for the idea though. I am hopeful that a solution will be found for this!
Thank you Lauren and milkduds. This worked for me as well. Does seem to be a bit cumbersome. Now must save files in folder and then open in Power Play and then open in Express Scribe rather than opening file as email attachment directly into Express Scribe. Anyone come up with fewer steps as yet?
I have checked my settings, and I have the Express Scribe set to system-wide hotkeys. However, they keyboard I have is brand new, and the F "function" keys that are used for the hotkeys have a dual usage. Volume up and down, rewind, play and pause, fast forward, search, among a few others are the secondary uses of some of these F keys.
When I am within the Express Scribe box and the window is activated, the hot keys work just fine, using the second function for the F key. (What I mean by this, for example, is F4 on my keyboard has a secondary use for play/pause. However, Express Scribe is set for F4 to stop and F9 to play. The F9 key has a secondary use for the "search" feature for my windows 10. When the express scribe box is active, the F4 key works to start and stop the audio, F9 does not play the audio, it in fact, pulls up the computer wide search box from the windows start menu. F4, however, works properly as it's secondary function for start/stop.)
When the window is not active, but is displayed over my Word document, F4 actually serves to start and stop the Udemy program I am using to learn this, it does not do anything for the Express Scribe audio.
I'm not super experienced with IT issues, but I've checked just about every setting I can personally think to check. It's almost as if the "secondary" use for these F "function" keys at the top of the keyboard are actually the primary use, and I am not able to figure out how to make the "function" part of the use for them the primary use. I have no idea how to simplify the issue to google it either! I have checked into settings for the keyboard and settings for the program, and I can't figure out how to adjust this setting, if it's even possible.
I should note: I also tried holding down control and alt to see if some combo of this would work, similar to when you're trying to use a special character on a dual use number key. This did not work either. lol helpp!
I'm having this same problem RIGHT now and need help. Express Scribe will ONLY play when I'm actively in the program, even if I do the above steps, when I'm in Word to type, it still won't play- it won't play using a foot pedal OR hot keys OR the integrated media keys on the keyboard. This has only been a problem with the new laptop I'm using- it has worked without issue for the last 14 years on many other machines. I'm incredibly frustrated and CANNOT work without a resolution.
Have you tried reinstalling the program and see if that helps with your issue? If not you can try going to START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM > from the pane on the left click on SOUND > then from the pane on the right click on the SOUND CONTROL PANEL > on the window that opens go to PLAYBACK > right-click on the device you have set as default for playback and choose PROPERTIES > ADVANCED tab > check the options under EXLUSIVE MODE section and click APPLY > OK and then OK again and test one more time. If the issue persists then you might want to contact NCH Technical Support here:
I'm pretty desperate for any advice someone might have for me...I'm freaking out! Today I updated ExpressScribe on my computer because it was performing poorly. I've been using the free version for the past 2 years with only minor issues, such as occasional freezing and lag. Today, the program for some reason was having severe issues with playback so I thought it probably just needed an update. Not so! It only made things worse. I discovered that Express Scribe no longer seemed to recognize my foot pedal (Infinity IN-USB-2) at all! Even though it had been working for the most part up until this point, Express Scribe no longer seemed to see it as a valid foot pedal--or even a foot pedal at all. The screen indicated that there was no device recognized at all. My next course of action was to buy the professional service, since a family friend had similar issues when her "free trial" ran out. I figured it was a gimmick to force people to buy the program but I felt like I had no choice, since there's no comparable transcription software out there that's actually free of charge. I purchased the professional software for $40.00 (not the standard but the advanced license). Unfortunately it appears that the pedal is STILL not recognized at all by ExpressScribe! When I open the application and go to Preferences>Controller setup wizard, it claims that there is no plug and play foot pedal connected at all, when that is clearly not the case. Even with the updated, professional purchased version! When I click on "plug and play controller diagnostics", I get the following message:
I am very frustrated because the program worked just fine with the free version just yesterday, and today it was acting up and freezing so I purchased it thinking that would resolve the minor issues, and it escalated into a severe issue where it is literally not even possible for me to use the program with this pedal anymore. This seems suspicious because this particular pedal is listed as a compatible pedal for the professional software. I plugged my pedal into a family friend's computer (she is also a transcriptionist and also uses ExpressScribe, but she has an older version of the program, 5 point something, with the basic licensure whereas I have 6.4 with the professional license), and the pedal worked on her computer. It is clearly a software issue and not a pedal issue. I have time-sensitive work that needs to be completed and I will be forced to use another transcription program if this problem is not resolved. I paid good money to have a program that actually works! I may also ask for a refund if I don't see this problem resolved soon, as it is currently a complete waste of money for me seeing as the program is blatantly not working at all for me. I thought maybe it might have something to do with my iOS as I just recently updated it on my laptop but that was in the beginning of the month. Like I said, this program was working pretty well up until today. I have no idea what to do at this point! I've even resorted to looking into other transcription programs, but seeing as I've paid for this one, if I can get it to work, it would obviously be ideal. Any (fast) advice would be appreciated.
I have just tested an Infinity in-sub-2 ver 14 and after running the controller setup wizard it worked fine on a Mac OS Sierra computer. To run the controller setup wizard you may open Express Scribe and go to Preferences > Control and make sure the check box to unable foot pedal controller is checked, then click on the controller setup wizard button, click on next and select the pedal if it shows under the options. In case the pedal does not show there you may want to try connecting the pedal to a different USB port on your computer until it sees the pedal. Once the pedal is recognized you may click on Next confirmed the device is recognized and click on Next again and do the controller command map to set which pedal performs each action and click no Finish.
I bought this device as I am newly set up in business and many companies use Express Scribe. I ordered it believing it would work immediately but it did not. I have registered my Express Scribe pro and when I went to run the set up wizard for the controller it says "Plug and play controller diagnostics for Express Scribe Transcription (Registered) v 6.05 (Mac OS X 10.11.6): No devices found". I plugged it into another computer ( a non Mac) to see if it would install and it did not.
I sent a message to NCH customer servcies who did promptly get back to me asking me with the following instructions: "to check the device is working properly and being detected by your system please click on "Apple logo -> About this Mac -> System report -> Hardware -> USB" you should see your device in the devices list". I did this and the foot pedal was not detected. I sent an email with a screen shot which shows that there was no detection of the foot pedal and is shows that my computer is using the latest hardwarde 3.0. I then received an email today from the customer service agent saying that it may be possible that because my PC runs on hardware USB 3.0 bus there is a possibility of foot pedal conflict as it's USB 2.0 device. If find this strange as my newly bought USB hub runs on 2.0 and works perfectly fine. When I plugged my foot pedal in the USB hub it still didn't work.
