I recently got into a discussion on the history of this so I brought a pal in who is an expert on Civil war Memorabilia. This was his assessment.

Glyn.

The saber is a Model 1840 cavalry saber used by mounted soldiers in the mid-1800s. The design was adopted by the military in the 1840s and was used through the Civil War. Because there is no maker’s name stamped on the blade, it was most likely made in Europe and imported for wartime use. Many of these sabers came from Germany and were heavily imported by the Union Army, although some may have gone south as well.

This example is what collectors call “attic condition,” showing a lot of age and wear from long storage. Originally it would have had a leather grip with braided wire to hold the leather in place. It is in rough shape, but it is still a genuine example that may have seen plenty of service during the Civil War.
