Hey Guys,

I just saw that there's an upright, full-size video arcade machine at my local thrift store.

It's a "Surf Planet" a 3D snowboarding game from 1996/97 time period.

I checked with the guy at the store who looks over equipment and fixes it, to see the general condition of the machine. The bottom-right side of the case is pulled out a bit. Wood glue and some ratchet straps should fix that. The back corners of the cabinet base are pulled in a bit, but that is a seperate section of wood from the sides, and could be easily replaced as well.

The coin mechanisms work properly. There's no keys, but the tumblers were removed, so the machine is open and LOOKS like you could lock it. It also has the "security bar" over the top that can have a padlock added to.

There's a bit of a bad connection for the main power cord. However, it's the stock cord and connector that's the same as any tower computer power supply.

The game does boot and work correctly.

Besides just using it as the original game, it might make a good cabinet for a MAME or other multi-video game setup. The joystick is only side-to-side (which would still work OK for Galaga!) and there's one "fire" button.

I have no idea how long this will be at the thrift store. I found this game on a couple online auctions, and it looks like it's worth $250-$300 at auction.

The thrift store has it priced at $99. They have the manual for it too.

If anyone says "YES! I want it now!", contact me, and I could go over there and pay for it, and you can pay me back right away when you come get it.

I snapped a few photos on my phone.

Here's links to the photos.

It would be cool to see a Raspberry Pi MAME cabinet at the space...

So, you know, if anyone wants to head up a group project. :)

Without seeing it, it's tough to tell, but we do need something better
than that American Horse shoes game....

A MAME cabinate was actually next on my list after this extruder project. Someone had mentioned a lounge at the new space and I was thinking what could be better? I have some old computes and setting up the whole thing is pretty easy. I would say yes on that cabinet but it looks like the case is in meh condition and we would just be gutting it anyway so I am sure I can get a cabinet with a broken game or make one for that price it cheaper. I still regret not picking one up that was in pretty good condition that was being thrown away last year.

For those of you who like to use Arduino/bootloaders on Tiny chips..

Arduino-Tiny is an open source set of ATtiny "cores" for the Arduino platform.

The Arduino platform currently supports Atmel ATmega processors. There is a need for the Arduino platform to work with physically smaller DIP package processors. The intent of this project is fulfill that need. Specifically, our goal is to provide a core that enables Arduino users to work with the ATtiny84 (84/44/24), ATtiny85 (85/45/25), and ATtiny2313 processors.

Ah yeah... the more I read up it seems like a Pi is not a great solution for most MAME builds...

I'm sure we can scrounge a nice PC. :)

And the cabinet should be black, and red, and have our logo... 8-bit style, or classic 1980s video game style.

yeah. Maybe you could use a Pi or an arduino to make the controls but a PC would be much nicer and easier for the emulation. Plus, if the computer is nice enough I am sure we could also rig it to play NES, SNES, Sega (Master System and Genesis), Neo Geo, Atari, and all that (kind of like my Wii which I hacked the shit out of). If the computer is good enough we may even be able to get Playstaion, Dreamcast, and N64. Dreamcast and playstation can be hit and miss though even on highend computers.

A Teensy can emulate a keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc... might be a good controller. (Also allows 6 'keys' to be pressed at once, which I guess is a requirement for some games, though I don't know which ones.)

I would be interested in kicking around a MAME cabinet build as well... I have been itching to fire up my Metal Slug series again!
