Makerbot X-Axis

So, the x-axis of the makerbot stopped working in between prints today.  It was only printing for 45 minutes on two different prints before it stopped working.  The x-axis still works, but it doesn't seem to be pulling hard enough for the belts to turn.  Not sure if the rods need some type of lube, or if the bearings are stuck a bit, but it isn't moving.

Not sure if anyone knows what the problem with this is, but I feel not equipped enough to fully debug it.

So, yeah, if anyone has an idea, let me know.  Otherwise, I'll wait until someone with deeper makerbot knowledge or google comes to the rescue.

Maybe the little hex-headed thread on the belt wheel driving the shaft needs to be tightened.  I should be able to look at it on Thursday nite if someone else doesn't beat me to it by then.

If the Replicator is like my RepRap, when the power is off, you should be able to freely slide things back and forth.

I don't believe any sort of lubricant is needed (unless MakerBot does things differently.)

So, to add more information to the situation, the x-axis can in fact move back and forth when not under power.  Also, when the x axis attempts to move under power, it can move with assistance.

that sounds like a motor issue to me. Might have a blown stepper coil
or something.

Agreed.. if it can 'freely' move with assistance with/without power...

Then it seems the motor would be the offender.

Meter it.. see what kind readings you are getting from and for it..

It could also be a loose wire.

Seems more likely a partially dead driver chip or a wire has come out of a motor connector.

Or maybe a pulley set screw has loosened and the pulley is not turning with the shaft it connects to or vice-versa.

or there is a mouse living in the controller. I think we just have to
take it apart and see.

Since it is largely wood then it has become infested with termites and and Brent's fear of wood is justified.
