Dear Laurel,
Please join us for a special public MiKE Council Meeting, hosted by Bucketworks, on Wednesday, October 24th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. featuring a "meet and greet" with Dale Dougherty, co-founder of O'Reilly Media, founding editor and publisher of MAKE Magazine and co-creator of Maker Faire.
Dougherty is the keynote speaker for the 9th annual SySTEMnow Conference on Thursday, October 25th.
MAKE Magazine debuted in 2005, followed by the first Maker Faire in the Bay Area in 2006. In 2011, Maker Faire attracted over 100,000 guests in the Bay Area, as well as large audiences in Detroit and New York City.
Before MAKE, Dougherty was the developer of Global Network Navigator (GNN), the first commercial website, launched in 1993 and sold to America Online in 1995. He was also developer and publisher of Web Review, the online magazine for web designers from 1995-1999. He was a lecturer at the UC-Berkeley School of Information from 1997-2002, and was also publisher of the O'Reilly Network and developed the Hacks series of books.
Dougherty is passionate about fostering a new generation of "makers" who are creative, innovative and curious. On February 19th, 2012, he was featured on CNN's "The Next List" and interviewed by Sanjay Gupta at MAKE headquarters in Sebastopol, California.
On November 3rd, 2011, the White House recognized Dougherty as one of the "Champions of Change: Make It in America" for his work in helping to create high-quality jobs in the United States. In May 2012, Dougherty led the launch of Maker Education Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for young people to make their ideas come to life.
Dougherty's TEDTalk is available online: http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/en//id/1065.
