Where's a good place to start learning about synthesizer technology?

Anyone out there know of a good website/book/etc. to start learning about synthesizer sound making?  I was at Guitar Center in Brookfield this past weekend, and I picked up a neat little clearance item called "SynthStation 25."  It's a 2 octave keyboard, and has room to plug in an iPod/iPhone.  I bought some cheap apps for it, and it looks like a fun way to learn about the basics of electronic music.

but I 'do' know there are always TONS & TONS of posts about that and snyth & midi projects omn the Arduino.cc forums

 

Id say start there.. and see where those posts/links lead you.

Midi files just have note and duration in them.  You tell the software that is reading the midi file what sound to use for the note.That is it boiled down to essentials.  After that the nuance can get quite complicated.

If you want to start from the basics, try puredata. There are quite a few tutorials on youtube and you really learn every aspect of computer generated sound.

Alternatively, try ubuntu studio. It is a variant of ubuntu that is made specifically for multimedia applications.
