Calculating Linear Distance From Rotation

I'm deferring to all the people who know better than I....

I need to calculate the distance that a piece will move downward in
relation to the rotation of a gear.

Think of a drill press....As you rotate the handle, the press moves
downward into the material.

How would I calculate the distance the press moves as a function of
rotation of the gear that drives the press down?

I suspect I could sit here and figure it out on my own, but my brain
is taking a day off.

I'm not entirely sure what to search for in Google, either. I keep
getting results that have to due with momentum and velocity, which are
negligible factors in this project.

Is it a 'gear' or a lead screw type of assembly?

(I know for lathes/mills that rated on the movement per turn/rotation)

Maybe start with the gear size/teeth/ratio.. and what it meshes with?
Start there for help/answers?

Or maybe do what my generic drill press does? Put a ruler along size the
'travel'.. and measure how much it moves (in distance) per tooth and per
rotation of the gear itself?

I believe, and I could be wrong..

360 * ( [Distance to move] / (2*pi*R) ) = Angle to move circle

this is of course assuming a circle, and not a gear (didnt compensate for teeth of a gear and how that affects it)

If it's a gear, use the "pitch diameter".

(pi)x(diameter of gear) will give you linear distance traveled for a full rotation of a gear.

Divide that by the # of teeth to get distance moved per tooth of gear moved. This will give you the rough distance.

Yep. Thank you all. I just found a link.

I don't think that the teeth of the gear will affect the distance
travelled.

The issue is that none of this has been constructed yet, so I can't
just use a ruler.

Pi*D=C. C=Linear distance travelled per one rotation of the gear. As
Vishal said, all I have to do is divide by the number of teeth...once
I figure out just how many teeth to give them.

Why not move it 1 full rotation and measure the distance traveled?
