Filling the hole in the wood shop wall

We still have a big hole in the wall between the wood shop and the main
meeting room. We've discussed various ways to fill it in, is anyone
interested in actually working on it?

If I do it, it will be very simple: a wood frame with plywood covering
the hole. I'll leave room for drywall in case someone wants to make it
look nice. If someone else wants to do something more elaborate, please
speak up now.

I'm not convinced that there's any point in making these few square
feet more soundproof than the rest of the wall. In any case, there's
enough noise transmission through the wall that I think we shouldn't use
the noisier tools while there's a meeting going on in the next room.

Probably best to just cover it with whatever....

This is another one of those things that is getting talked to death, and will take less than 30 minutes to just do. frame it, slap on some drywall and call it done.

Rodney, it's the old air return vent in the wall, 15 feet up or so, 4 feet-ish wide, 2 feet-ish tall.

Do we know how much weight the duct will hold?

That's a reasonable thing to do if you think that no amount of
soundproofing will make any difference. I happen to agree, but others
don't. My point is that whoever does it gets to decide how it gets done.
If nobody steps up, I'll do it more or less the way you suggested (but
I'll match the thickness to the existing wall).

I don't consider the discussion to be a waste of time, and in fact
people had stopped discussing it. But nobody was doing it either. So,
I'm giving people a chance to step up before I "just do it".

Actually it's 6ft wide by 2ft high.
I don't know if it was a supply or a return, but right now it doesn't
go anywhere.

If you get to it, you certainly have my thanks. I had anticipated framing it so the drywall would be flush.

I don't think flush and smooth are a priority, in fact I think using odd chinks of material that don't seem to have another use would be much better.

That way in 3 years, when someone asks "whats that?"  we can make up all kinds of interesting stories:

That was my thought, but at least one member disagreed. I was going to
leave open the possibility of someone else "prettying it up" later.
