So does anyone know anything about maybe building an ultrasonic
knife?

From what I have read the knifes mainly consist of a power supply, a
cord from the PS to the actual knife handle, and in the Handel an
ultrasonic generator which in turn is then physically connected to a
blade.

I believe that the in Handel ultrasonic generator is the "crux" of the
issue, these cartridges can be bought online for thousands but why
couldn't someone just buy like a 75ish watt ultrasonic vibrator and
powersupply meant for a replacement ultrasonic cleaner, the $1000
knifes use the same wattage also so why not? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a plan to me! Monday or Tuesday I'll order the generator
and power supply off Ebay, its like $60 so its not bad at all.

Those things are great for extracting teeth with minimal bone trauma!
I'll be happy to test it if you get one built!  Any volunteers?

Really curious... Did you ever build one of these? I am considering doing the same for slitting polyester fabrics.

eBay has ultrasonic transducers for $14 for cleaning, but not sure (a) if they're powerful enough for heating, or (b) how to attach to a knife/blade.

Any links you can suggest from your own research?

Much appreciated.

Nope, never made it, i got busy with something else. I think all the special sauce is in the design of the knife. I think i read somewhere you need to design the blade and power piece attached to the knife in regards to the frequency. I saw this done using FEA in something like solidworks cosmos.

Sounds like I need to find an expert or just buy something already made. I also remember hearing the term "ultrasonic horn" which suggests the type of design you are talking about.

Thanks!

Yeah all the work is in designing the knife, see that weird thick part on top and the slots in the middle? Thats all for the right frequency. Ultrasonic knifes are also used for surgery, you know now that i think of it there has got to be some type of holed that would fit a standard exacto knife blade, perhaps go from there. Hey also the jewelry area does have an ultrasonic knife there. Talk to John H and he would prolly show you it.
