I am putting in a new wall plate for a Cat 5 cable run. I have put some
in before, but I never noticed that there was a choice between A or B
wiring configuration. The guide I have followed to make cables had me
making A type connectors. Since I make both ends identical, there hasn't
been any problems.

I would rather follow the correct standard, if there is one. Which one
is recommended, and why?

568B is the standard for data connections.
568A is the standard for voice connections.

Electrically they are the same, the pair colors are different.

Why. Because they can.

Thanks, since half of my house is wired to the 568A standard, I may as
well keep it uniform.

The pack of RJ-45 terminal ends that I have has the T568B listed as
AT&T, which would be opposite of what you said. It just gets more
confusing the deeper I look into it. I just want to finish the project.

EIA/TIA 568-A or B, just pick one and use it everywhere. There's no real functional difference, only thing is, wiring a run or jumper with one end -A and the other -B creates a crossover cable. With most switches doing auto-MDIX, it's hard to justify making a crossover cable these days. On purpose, anyhow.

As long as you're consistent, it doesn't matter, especially in a home/SOHO setting.
