There's a movement afoot to bring an Ubuntu Convention (UBUCON) to Green
Bay sometime during Summer 2024.

Early stages. Not even a mailing list yet. No firm dates.

During the next couple meetings, I'll update if it happens. I'll also be
gauging if there's any interest in folks attending...or volunteering to
assist.

Cheers,

Ian

I've never been to such a thing. I think I might like to go.

Stuff like this usually during the week in the daytime? I'd have to work a deal with my employer.

Looking forward to your updates.

Hey everybody,

Ubucon 2024 update, 13 Jan 2024:

The organizing committee had their first meeting yesterday.

- Tentatively two days in August 2024 in Green Bay. Ideally second
weekend of August (Conflicts with MKE LUG)

- Despite the "Ubucon" label, the organizers want a "big tent." All open
source.

- Several goals are about community-building, recruiting and retaining
participants. This, coincidentally can be a boon for our LUG, too.

- Canonical, Ltd is planning to budget some support (including swag),
and their Community Team is involved with organizing. But they're not
going to plan and fund the whole thing. It's a local effort.

Early days. The effort is less than one week old.

We could use a hand from anybody experienced in not-for-profit 501c(6)
or (7) organizations.

We could use a hand from anybody experienced in event planning (of course).

We could use a hand from anybody with contacts among potential sponsors
(like among the many tech firms in the Madison area)

We could use a hand from anybody with contacts among the many computer
science and computer-related communities in colleges and universities
around the region.

Cheers,

Ian

Hey everybody,

Ubucon 2024 update, 10 Feb 2024

The planning committee is meeting weekly.

- Dates tentatively moved from August to July 27-28, 2024.

- Working on a venue.

- The main sponsor remains likely to be Canonical Ltd.

- Despite the "Ubu" name, big tent for Free and Open Source software and
groups.

We could use a hand from anybody experienced in event planning.

We could use a hand from anybody with contacts among potential sponsors.

That would be such an excellent way to escape the air show and Harley festival! I always leave town for those.

Ubucon 2024 update, 8 Mar 2024

- Dates tentatively still July 27-28, 2024. Working on a venue to make the dates solid.
- The main sponsor, Canonical Ltd., is expected to commit later this month.
- Call for Presentations and Call for Volunteers should occur in March. Awaiting the venue.
- Admission: Free.

We will need help in April (90 days out) to start getting the word out to Linux and FOSS users, developers, students and teachers, and their assorted online communities.

We would love some help organizing some family-friendly social activities for both during the day (like a Green Bay scavenger hunt) and evening (like a Game Night). Activities for both the Linux enthusiast and for accompanying non-enthusiast family members.

Cheers,

Ian

UbuCon is coming to Green Bay!
- New dates: 1-2 August 2024 (Thursday and Friday) at Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College. Awaiting signatures to lock in that venue, so don't reserve hotel rooms quite yet. A weekend event just won't work for 2024.
- Call for Presentations and Call for Volunteers should occur as soon as the venue deposit is made. About two weeks.
- Admission is still free!

It would be great to get a couple talks (and lightning talks!) from us.

Cheers,

Ian

Hello Ian,

Thanks for the update. I plan to attend no matter what day of the week it finally lands on. Once the venue and dates are locked in please post it to the the MLUG email list.

Once I see the call for presentations I may throw my hat in the ring.

Having Fun,
Roger M. Jenson

It's happening!

August 1-2, 2024.
Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College, Green Bay.
Admission: FREE

Call for Papers (well, really abstracts), deadline May 31: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubucon-north-america-2024-call-for-papers/44556. They have no theme or particular subject in mind; they will choose a theme based on the submissions. Includes lightning talks, so flaunt what you got! Apologies for the rather cumbersome submission process, which requires login accounts on two different sites. (I've had both of those logins for years. They are reputable.)

Tickets: FREE at https://opencollective.com/ubucon-na/events/ubucon-north-america-2024-8919b284. Scroll down past the donation section. Plenty available.  (I am the admin for ticket data; collected information is for few specific purposes: ID, Update notifications, etc.)

If you're in touch with other groups that have not heard, please feel free to pass along!

Cheers,
Ian

An abstract doesn't need to be perfect. But it does need to be sent!

Sad news: We have decided to postpone the event to summer 2025.
Reason: Not enough presentations submitted. We didn't want to ask people to travel for a sparse event.
We gently remind folks to cancel their reservations.

In two weeks, the committee will meet to begin planning the event for next year.
We are still committed to bringing this event to life, so be thinking about presentations and lightning talks that you would like to see from others, and that you might like to do yourself.
We want the event to be great.

Cheers,
-Ian
