I am an assistant professor in transportation engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. Along with my colleague David Keith of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I am working to develop improved models of the charging behavior of plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicle drivers. This research is important for understanding the environmental and cost implications of plug-in vehicles, their interactions with the electric grid, and for predicting good locations for charging equipment.
We would like to request your assistance in this work. We are hoping that you would be willing to forward to the members of the Wisconsin EAA an invitation to participate in our online survey, which should take 5-15 minutes for them to complete. We have already had a great response from the Seattle EVA membership, but the work will benefit from a sample that is larger and more diverse in terms of both geography and vehicle types.
I would be happy to discuss this work with you further before you send anything out to your members, to answer any questions or concerns that you might have. I have pasted below some text that explains a little more about the work. Please feel free to give me a call or email if you would like to discuss, or feel free to copy and paste the invitation below and send along to your membership. Your help in this would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Don MacKenzie

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH
We would like to invite you to contribute to a research project aimed at better understanding the charging decisions of plug-in vehicle drivers. The survey should take between 5 and 15 minutes to complete, and is open to plug-in vehicle drivers aged 18 and over. You can read more about this work below, or begin the survey immediately by going to:
evcharging2013.surveyanalytics.comPurpose
The goal of this work is to understand how various factors affect drivers’ decisions on when and where to charge their plug-in vehicles. This is important for developing charging infrastructure, evaluating vehicle-grid interactions, and setting public policy related to plug-in vehicles.
Who should participate?
Anyone age 18 or older who regularly drives a plug-in electric vehicle (all-electric or plug-in hybrid). Participation is voluntary and you can withdraw from the survey at any time.
How long will it take?
Between 5 and 15 minutes.
What information do you collect?
We will not ask for any personally identifiable information.
You will be presented with eight hypothetical situations. In each situation, you will indicate whether or not you would choose to charge your vehicle if you encountered this situation in the real world. We will also collect some basic demographics, and information on your vehicle and usual charging habits.
