Thanks very much to everyone who came out to support the event. I
can't do this stuff if nobody shows up.
The weather forecast Thursday evening looked a little grim. 50%
chance of thunderstorms. Oh well, nothing we can do about it except
light a small fire and drink beer. Thanks to the Joey Haupt tree
disposal service for helping me get rid of that maple that used to be
in my yard. Trish bought pizza.
Friday morning we wake up and the rain is a no-show. Lovely weather
all day, mid 70's with enough overcast to keep the sun from beating on
us.
I did tech inspection on 34 bikes which may be an attendance record.
Wendy and Josh were running in the Sportbike 101 school. We also had
two guys running in the open Intermediate group.
First timers included Jen HIll, Daniela Dolak, Stephen Pettinger, and
(new to the ChiVinMoto track day) Anders Carlson.
Jason wound up bringing the most reliable CB160 on the planet. How
many AHRMA GP200 bikes were there? 9? Pretty good showing from the
little buzzbombs. Andrew and Trish came over from Detroit, I think
they get the "high mileage" prize. That's a good looking bike Andrew
was riding. Rebecca's new suspension and ignition looked to be
working pretty good, someone should have told her about that stuff
sooner. There was a pretty healthy Wisconsin contingent this time
despite Mark Hoedel wimping out, something about surgery or something.
Me, I had a great day. My bike ran great. There was a portable dyno
on site, I made a few runs on it and I'm getting 73hp at 9,500rpm.
Not bad for an engine with 60hp stock. Handling was greatly improved
thanks to some fine tuning by Karsten at Framecrafters. And for all
of you who were startled by my improved lap times? Go to Cornerspin.
Jennifer got in her first track day on the former Paul Elledge DR350.
She's enjoying the 17 inch rims. Once again, you have to put the
right person on the right bike.
If you're one of the many, many people who have said things like "Man,
that track day stuff looks like fun, I'd love to try something like
that, etc." you really should get out there and do it. But maybe
you're intimidated by the idea of getting on track with modern sport
bikes or vintage race bikes or whatever. That's totally
understandable.
Next spring you will no longer have that excuse. Stay tuned.
