        Summer Metalsmithing Workshops  
    at the UWM Peck School of the Arts 
      

    Jewelers and metalsmiths of all skill levels are invited to join us for a series of exciting and challenging weeklong summer intensives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We will investigate a variety of techniques and processes, learn new ways to solve problems in metal, and explore our creative potential.     WORKSHOPS AND COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
    Workshops are open to all levels, with recommended levels indicated for some workshops.

    June 23 and 24 (10am-4pm)
    SAWING AND PIERCING: Make Pop-up Earrings
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    Make your first pair of POP-UP earrings as you learn the fundamentals of jewelry making: sawing, piercing, filing, sanding, forming and basic soldering.
    A great workshop for beginners!

    June 25 - 27 (6-9pm)
    EMBOSSING and SOLDERING: Make a Sleeved Ring
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    In this popular sterling silver ring workshop, learn how to emboss and incorporate a variety of metals in your design of a sterling silver sleeved ring. Roller printing, hammering, soldering and patination techniques will be covered.
    Recommended prerequisite: Sawing and Piercing Workshop.

    June 30 and July 1 (10am-4pm)
    ENAMELING: Make a Pendant
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    Learn the ancient technique of cloisonné enameling! By layering and fusing a variety of opaque and transparent glass powders, students will create a one of a kind colorful pendant.
    No prerequisite.

    July 9 - July 11 (6-9pm)
    CHAIN MAKING and SIMPLE CLASPS: Make a Bracelet
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    Ever wonder how chain is made? Students will learn a variety of wire working techniques from twisting and hammering to small-scale soldering and simple clasp construction. Create a one of the kind bracelet with a variety of different metals from sterling silver to copper! The options are limitless!

    July 14 and 15 (10am-4pm)
    WORKING WITH STEEL WIRE: Making Steel Rings and Pendants
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    In this workshop explore the process of working with steel wire in jewelry. Cut, bend, shape and use sterling silver and gold solder to create three-dimensional forms. Make samples using the processes and then create a variety of jewelry forms from rings to pendants.

    July 16 - 18 (6-9pm)
    Trappings: BEZELS and TABBING: Make a Ring
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    Have you always wanted to add stones or other materials in your jewelry? Learn the process of creating bezels and tabs to trap a variety of materials from the traditional stones to plastics. Design and create a silver band and then solder your handmade "trapping" to set your material or stone!
    Recommended prerequisite: Sawing and Piercing Workshop and Soldering Workshop.

    July 21 and 22 (10am-4pm)
    ADVANCED SOLDERING: Make a Container with Fitted Lid
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    Take your metalsmithing skills to the next level. Learn advanced techniques in large scale silver soldering and fabricate a 3 x 3 container with riveted lid using 18-gauge copper and brass. Students will also dive into various surface techniques from roller printing, hammering, sawing and piercing and patination.
    Recommended prerequisite: Sawing and Piercing Workshop and Soldering Workshop.

    July 23 - 25 (6-9pm)
    DIE FORMING: Make a Tea Strainer
    Instructor: Stephanie Voegele
    It's teatime! Explore the process of hydraulic die forming and decorative sawing and piercing to create your own tea strainer. Use acrylic dyes to make a sterling silver three-dimensional form that you can customize with your own designs.
    Recommended prerequisite: Sawing and Piercing Workshop.

    July 28 and 29 (10am-4pm)
    POWDER COATING: Give That Object Some Color (Bring a metal object to powder coat)
    Instructor: Chad Bridgewater
    Learn the techniques of powder coating. Metal prep, masking, shooting color and curing. Students will make samples using these processes and will have the opportunity to color objects made in earlier workshops.
    No prerequisite.

    July 30 - August 1(6-9pm)
    METAL FORMING: Make a Bowl
    Instructor: Chad Bridgewater
    In this workshop students will explore the metal forming process of sinking to create a bowl and other copper and steel metal shaping techniques such as sinking, angle raising, english wheel, and air planisher.
    No prerequisite.

    August 4 and 5 (10am-4pm)
    BRONZE CASTING: Make a Bronze Relief
    Instructor: Chad Bridgewater
    In this workshop students will design and carve bonded sand scratch blocks, and prepare them for metal casting. Metal finishing and patination techniques will be applied to the cast object. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the pouring of their mold.
    No prerequisite.

    August 6 - 8 (6-9pm)
    METAL FABRICATION AND MIG WELDING: Construct Small-scale Fabrication Tools and Sheet-metal Bending Break.
    Instructor: Chad Bridgewater
    In this workshop students will explore the process of Mig welding and various metal fabrication techniques. Introduction to basic steel fabricating tools and equipment (4 ½" hand grinder, cut-off wheels and abrasives, band saws, rolling mill for rod and sheet, sandblasting, buffing, and drill press).

    INSTRUCTORS
    Stephanie Voegele has recently completed a year long Fountainhead Fellowship teaching metals in the Craft/Material Studies Department at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Prior to her position at VCU, she taught in the Jewelry and Small Metals Department at Humboldt State University. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Georgia in 2010 and her B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2006.

    Chad Bridgewater is currently the Jewelry and Metalsmithing Studio Technician and a Sculpture welding instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is a recent graduate of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with a BFA in Jewelry/Metalsmithing and Sculpture. He also works as a metal fabricator at a local sculpture foundry.

    Frankie Flood is an Associate Professor in Jewelry/Metalsmithing at UWM. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois, where he received his M.F.A. degree in Metalsmithing. Frankie completed a B.A. in Art Education and a M.A. in Metals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.

    Lucy Derickson is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, with a BFA in Jewelry/Metalsmithing and Art Education. While at UWM, she worked as the Jewelry/Metalsmithing Studio Assistant for 7 semesters and received numerous awards and honors, including four Stipends for Undergraduate Research. Her work has been exhibited nationally in a number of juried exhibitions. Currently Lucy is an Art Specialist in the Whitnall School District, as well as a lecturer at UWM.

    FEES
    Workshops: $150.00 each
    (Enroll early, space is limited)

    LEVELS
    Although recommended levels are indicated, workshops are open to all levels. All materials and tools provided except safety glasses.

    Art Building Room 391, 2400 E. Kenwood Blvd. on the UWM campus.

    PARKING
    Available in the Union Parking Garage at 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., in the lot behind the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd. or on the street (meters in effect).

    LUNCH
    Available in the UWM Union and the surrounding neighborhood or bring your own.

    REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
    Closed toe shoes and a pair of safety glasses rated Z87+ are required to participate in any of the workshops. Safety glasses may be purchased at your local hardware store or the Panther Bookstore - 3132 N. Downer Ave., (414) 967-1111.

    All materials and tools for the workshops are supplied.

    REGISTRATION
    Registration is ongoing and workshops are filled on a first come, first served basis. Maximum capacity for each workshop is 16.

    CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
    A full refund is issued to program participants if a workshop is cancelled for any reason. A full refund will be issued, less a $15 processing fee, for any cancellations received prior to 14 days before the start of your workshop. No refunds are issued if registration is cancelled less than 14 days prior to the start of your workshop.
