So I was thinking of getting a lap timer for the ol’ moto cycle.

Anybody have recommendations?  In a cursory search of the internets I found a USA company called Digatron.

I’ve never used a lap timer and really have no idea what functions may be useful.  I’m really just interested in lap times…but if you know something I don’t please fill me in.

Thanks,

Matthew

A lot of people use the XT lap timers.  The Ultra Lap and the Mini Lap both do the same thing - but with the Ultra Lap you can mount the sensor remotely and the display on the triple clamp (or whereever).... the Mini has the pickup built in, so you may have to mount that where you can't see the display - which isn't too much of an issue - you shouldn't be worried about times WHEN you're riding.... just after you come in.

I've also used the AIM, and it's nice:

I think the AIM is $250... so it's a bit more. Both the AIM and the XT have the same basic functionality, and they both work off the same beacon signal. The AIM one includes a beacon, whereas the XT does not.... so if you are running somewhere where they don't put a beacon out, you might want the AIM from a cost standpoint. But most track/race orgs put a beacon out, or there's always someone there with a beacon.

Oh.... one thing the AIM will let you do that the XT won't:  with the AIM you can get a separate beacon that can be set-up part way around the track and give you split times or segment times through the two different parts of the track that the beacon separates (as well as your complete lap times of course).

If you really want to go nuts, you can get the GPX Pro:

The Pro is a GPS enabled lap timer - so no beacon is required. The Pro can actually "draw" a map of the track, and then you can set up split times however you like. You can then see what parts of the track you are consistent or inconsistent on. You can also buy sensors to plug into the Pro so that you can monitor suspension travel, throttle, brake, etc., if you really want to go nuts.....

I think the Pro is, well.... it's a lot.

I downloaded this onto my phone:

http://racechrono.com/

No idea how well it will work. There's a map of Blackhawk in the
library, I'll be testing it out on Friday.

FYI I downloaded the "racechrono" app that Bob mentioned below.

It worked "the biz".

Black Hawk is loaded into the racechrono track library and has splits already located on the track. All I had to do was pick the track and hit the big red "start" button and put my phone in my pocket before heading out on track.

At the end of each session I pulled out my phone and turned off the timer. (No big red stop button was a little frustrating.)

After the day I looked back at my sessions. The app saves each run separately and gives you all your lap times, splits, distance, and (I thought this was super cool) a hypothetical "ideal lap" that combines your best splits. It EVEN has a little map with a little red arrow that represented my location on track that corresponds to a graph showing speed. WOW! So I could look at corner speeds for each corner, for each lap. Crazy...just crazy.

Now, as with any "connected to seven satellite" technology, it was not perfect. There were a few areas where it was off; mainly in some of the areas where the track is tighter and the speeds change a few times rapidly in a small area. However, I did have my stepfather there recording lap times as well and the racechrono lap times jived with his hand held lap times, so I call that good enough.

The app was free. Just amazing.

Thanks Bob for putting me onto it.

Hope it worked for you as well.

How close were the racechrono times compared to the stopwatch?
