As far as I can tell, up until a few weeks ago I was one of the last few dozen people in the United States who had yet to “get into beans.” I’m not sure this makes much sense, since someone who routinely eats $10 tins of fish guts for lunch would, you’d think, be open-minded about an expensive version of a pantry staple, but skepticism of a spate of people seeming to performatively substitute bean consumption for a personality (said the resident of a glass house, wielding his rock) and, more basically, of $8 bags of beans kept me in the darkness until, on a whim, I bought a bag of Rancho Gordo pinto beans at a fancy-goods store in the Philadelphia suburbs and saw the light.

Once I’m ready to make the beans I just rinse them, toss them in a big pot, and cover them with the broth by about two inches. (This should leave over about two cups, most of which you’ll end up adding to the pot to replace evaporated liquid.) Then I add a fair amount of good chili powder, a bay leaf, a strip of rinsed kombu, and a lot of cumin (as in I add too much cumin, then add some more), and bring it all up, uncovered, to a hard boil. At this point I add in three tablespoons of my second-best olive oil, let it boil for 15 minutes, and bring it down to “bubbles barely breaking the surface” heat with the lid on the pot but ajar. Then I let it go, checking every half hour or so to give a gentle stir and see if I need to add just a bit more of the stock; after about an hour, the beans are starting to get tender, at which point I salt it (you can salt whenever you want, and while I use very little, if you’re more into it maybe about a tablespoon) and add a bit of liquid if it needs it. (This is also a good time to fish out the kombu if you haven’t yet, since it can dissolve in the beans if left too long.) Depending on the kind of bean—I use pintos, black beans, and pinquitos, from Rancho Gordo, which tend to take about two and a half hours in all, and find ones from the bulk bin at my local hippie store can take considerably longer—it can take anywhere from another half hour to several hours for the beans to be done. What “done” is is a matter of taste once they’ve reached a certain tenderness; I like to leave them until they’re pretty tender and just covered by a saucy broth and mash some up with a masher, then squeeze about a third of a lemon in and add a little liquid and let them go another 10 or 15 minutes.

Michael Pinto is a well-intentioned simpleton born and brought up in a small Goan village. His world revolves around his doting mother and his passion for music. After his mother's sudden death, he decides to become a priest to fulfill her last wish. Before attending school, he plans to visit his childhood friend Sameer in Mumbai. At a train station, Michael unknowingly disrupts a meeting between Maggie, an aspiring dancer who instantly attracts his attention, and a crook who intends to sell her to a pimp in Delhi. Michael is left alone at Sameer and his wife Suhani's apartment when they leave for a party.

Michael gets in an accident with a drunken female driver, Reshma, a yesteryear actress and the don's girlfriend. He offers her a ride home, which she accepts. At her home Reshma explains to him, in drunken stupor, that she suspects the don of infidelity. The don arrives at the house to declare his love for Reshma. Michael meanwhile daydreams about Maggie, while playing a guitar in the backyard. The don invites him to his party, where Michael comes across Sameer and Suhani and everyone else that he had encountered over the night. He also briefly reunites with Maggie, who is performing at the party. She is taken hostage and put into a deep freeze refrigerator, alongside a dead body that Ajay and Vijay had been carrying around all night, as she overhears Mac's plan to assassinate the don. Unable to bring themselves to terms with killing their boss, Ajay and Vijay free Maggie and later surrender to the police.

Many state parks have organized groups that actively support their park. These nonprofit organizations, sometimes called "friends groups," help with daily programs, special events, fundraising and public education. These groups serve as important links to local communities and park user groups, as well.

My Friend Pinto which was probably planned as a social satire on urban life style and the inherent callousness of ruthless money minded city slickers turns into a meaningless one-night stand. Pun intended.

Now returning to Prateik Michael Pinto, who has just landed in Mumbai. He's here to meet and spend a week with his childhood friend Sam (Arjun Mathur). Sam is a yuppie who puts up with an overbearing boss at the office and a domineering wife at home. In this chaos lands up his childhood buddy Pinto who hopes to spend a week with him.

Pinto behaves more like he's travelled two hundred years through a time machine to reach Mumbai instead of the overnight journey he's undertaken to reach Mumbai Central station. There is murder and mayhem all around him but Pinto remains oblivious of this fact. And the mindless so called humour begins.

A crowded station, two gun-toting goons, a conman on the run with a huge bag stuffed with moolah could have been the most appropriate fertile ground for the hilarity to begin. But first-time director Raagav Dar prefers to focus on Prateik the actor and lets the supporting cast slip into the background. And somebody tripping on a suitcase or accidentally wrenching off a handle are jokes associated more with the Rohit Shetty school of humour.

Trite gags are interwoven in a script lacking in focus or suspense. The characters keep up popping up at random intervals and then disappear from screen. Makarand Deshpande plays a retired Mallu Don who wishes to keep his mistress happy. Makarand tries hard to make the audience laugh, but in today's times is the 'mallu' accent enough to have the audience rolling in their seats? Not really, despite a valiant effort Makarand doesn't even succeed in evoking a chuckle.

There's Divya Dutta as Reshma, a failed actress who tries hard to seduce a younger man. Considering the oomph factor which Divya is capable of oozing on screen, it is one more opportunity lost as the all-pervading air is one of buffoonery.

Kalki Koechlin's Hindi speaking abilities improve with every film. But she is a bit of a miscast as she looks older than Prateik. A small role carried off effortlessly.

My Friend Pinto is a great opportunity for Prateik to showcase his skills both as an actor and a dancer. The young awkward boy from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na has metamorphosed into a fine and confident actor. An endearing smile which can win many over many pretty young things. Yet he doesn't look like a shy young lad who has never visited a big city. A miscast for this role.

Paying homage to the all-time cult film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron there is also a dead body being lugged around and which needs to be disposed off at the earliest. Doesn't form an integral part of the story, it appears as an add-on to a shoddy script.

As the grand finale Ragaav Dar summarily commentates on the lessons embedded in the script. Doesn't say much for his story-telling abilities.

See this only if you are a Prateik Babbar fan. Else avoid.

Rediff Rating:

Abby Spurling was left stunned and holding back tears as she stood in front of the lifeguard chair that she said her friend, 19-year-old Keith Pinto, was in when he was tragically struck by lightning.

Twenty-something Michael Pinto has grown up in a small Goan village, believing everyone in the world to be simple, kind and honest, just like him. His world revolves around a doting mother, a passion for music and the memories of a childhood friend, Sameer, who left Goa for Mumbai many years ago and hasn't replied to his frequent letters ever since. Pinto's talent for music is only matched by his knack for finding trouble in the unlikeliest of places often resulting in the most outlandish and hilarious situations. When Pinto's idyllic world is shattered by the sudden demise of his mother he decides to head to Mumbai in search of the only friend he knows. Will Pinto find Sameer or will trouble find him first? Will Pinto and his crazy antics survive the big bad city or more importantly, will Mumbai survive a phenomenon called Pinto?

I recommend using beans like the ones from A Really Satisfying Bean Broth, but one 15-ounce can of pinto beans works great, too; just make sure to add enough stock or water to equal the 1 cup of liquid needed.

Plus, these pinto beans are seriously simple (just 10 ingredients and 1 pot required). And hands-on prep time is really only 15-20 minutes, since the soaking and cooking take place while you do other things. If I can do it, you can do it. Let me show you how!

We have found that 6-8 hours is the optimal amount of time for soaking dry pinto beans. The longer you soak them, the more tender they will become, and the more likely they will split and separate during cooking.
