Thethird season of Prison Break, an American serial drama television series, commenced airing in the United States on September 17, 2007, on Mondays at 8:00 pm (EST) on Fox. Prison Break is produced by Adelstein-Parouse Productions, in association with Rat Entertainment, Original Film and 20th Century Fox Television. The season contains 13 episodes, and concluded on February 18, 2008. The season was shorter than the previous two due to the Writer's Guild strike.

Prison Break revolves around two brothers: one who has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit and his younger sibling, a genius structural engineer, who devises an elaborate plan to help him escape prison. The two brothers escape prison in the first season, but are hunted down during the second season and ultimately Michael is recaptured and sent to a Panamanian jail, Penitenciara Federal de Sona, at the end of the second season. The third season revolves around Michael's breakout from Sona with several other inmates.

In their season review, IGN wrote, "With so much going against it, this shortened third season of Prison Break could have been disastrous. But instead, the writers managed to not only salvage the season, but tell a tightly woven, compelling and action-packed story" and gave it an 8.5 out of 10.[13]

Unlike many other TV shows, Prison Break was primarily filmed outside of Hollywood. The first season was primarily shot in and around Chicago, Illinois.[14][15] During the second season, filming was moved to Dallas, Texas.[16] Filming for the third season continued to be done in Dallas, but the price tag increased to about $3 million per episode.[17] Several of the exterior scenes with Lincoln and Gretchen negotiating the escape from the Panama jail were shot in the Casco Viejo quarter of Panama City.[18]

Of the show's five seasons, Prison Break season 5 is undoubtedly the worst. Not only does it continue Prison Break's downward trend of adding unnecessary conspiracies to the story just to keep it going, but it also ruins Michael Scofield's death in Prison Break: The Final Break, which itself barely managed to achieve successful closure after continuing from Prison Break season 4. Set seven years after the previous season, Prison Break season 5 retcons Michael's death by revealing that he was actually alive in a Yemen prison all along.

The other Prison Break main characters, Burrows, Sara, T-Bag, and C-Note, then have to help him break out of prison (again) and unravel (another) far-fetched conspiracy that explains why he was put away the most recent time. All of these unnecessary and convoluted factors are why Prison Break season 5 is the worst one of the whole series and provides fairly concrete proof that the revival season was a big mistake.

Despite declining ratings following its unrealistic fourth season, Prison Break's original ending after its cancelation in 2009 was for a different reason altogether. Former Fox media executive Kevin Reilly revealed that Prison Break was canceled due to a lack of creativity in the writer's room, prompting many to wonder why Prison Break season 5 was greenlit. As originally reported by E! Online, Reilly stated, "The show has just played out. You get to a point creatively where you feel all the stories have been told, and you want to end strong." This moment of prescience would prove relatively short-lived, as Prison Break season 5 was confirmed in 2015.

If nothing else, Prison Break season 5 was designed as a concrete ending for the series, reuniting the brothers once and for all. That said, season 5 sets up Prison Break season 6, with Michael being offered a government job to make use of his unique skills. Star Wentworth Miller also revealed that same year he pitched an endearingly silly season 6 idea where the brothers are locked up by their psychotic, previously unrevealed brother Tag, and they'd have to relive their past escapes in a new prison.

Series creator Paul Scheuring, on the other hand, appears content that Prison Break season 5 ending is definitive. Fox's most recent statement on the series' future in August 2019 confirms Scheuring's sentiments, with the network stating that there are no current plans to revive Prison Break to date. The final nail in the coffin for the show's future, however, arrived in February 2021 after the previously keen Wentworth Miller reversed his stance, advising that there would be no more plans for Prison Break featuring Michael Wentworth and closing the book on the series' already tenuous future once and for all.

As surprising as it is that Prison Break season 5 happened in the first place, what's even more surprising is that the cast agreed to return when their careers were doing just fine. Dominic Purcell (Lincoln Burrows) has taken on the role of Mick Rory/Heat Wave in the Arrowverse, appearing as the character in Arrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, and most famously DC's Legends of Tomorrow. He also appeared in the British-German horror movie Blood Red Sky as Berg. Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield) has joined his co-star in the Arrowverse, playing Leonard Snart/Captain Cold in The Flash and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Other Prison Break cast members have moved on since the series' first ending. Robin Tunney (Veronica Donovan) is mainly known for '90s cult classics like Empire Records and The Craft, but since Prison Break, she had a stint on The Mentalist and the 2020 psychological drama film Horse Girl. Peter Stormare (John Abruzzi) has mostly branched out into voiceover work, appearing in popular television series and videogames such as Castlevania, Elder Scrolls Online, and Destiny. Amaury Nolasco (Fernando Sucre) can be seen as Frankie Cuevas Sr. in Hightown, while Sarah Wayne Callies (Sara Tancredi) may be remembered the most as Lori on The Walking Dead.

Prison Break season 5 is far from the only revival series that has had a mixed to negative reception, and it has become a common trend among revival shows. Arrested Development famously had a troubled season 4 development, and when finally came to fruition, it was considered a disappointment as the beloved ensemble cast hardly had any scenes together. Heroes Reborn, the follow-up to the cult classic sci-fi series Heroes, took away what made the original show great too. Additionally, even the Frasier revival series has gotten negative reviews, which is especially surprising given how many accolades the original series has to its name.

Unfortunately, while fans want to see their favorite characters from wrapped-up shows back on the screen, the odds of a revival series being a genuinely satisfying continuation are extremely slim. Along with other reboot series such as The X-Files, Fuller House, and Gilmore Girls, Prison Break joins the list of disappointing TV revivals. However, a few have been successful, with Twin Peaks: The Return being the gold standard of revival shows. Veronica Mars and Justified: City Primeval are also examples of TV series revivals done right.

Following the Crystal Gems' defeat by Jasper, Steven wakes imprisoned in a cell with a black eye, blocked by an electric, yellow force field. Eventually, after discovering that as a half-human, he can walk through it, he sets out to find the others. He finds an irate Gem prisoner named Ruby, who is surprised to see him penetrate the force fields so easily without any harm whatsoever. Momentarily, they then hear the singing of a girl coming from far away, Ruby recognizes it as Sapphire's voice. Steven sets Ruby free from the force field to search for their allies.

They run through the hallways, while Ruby calls for Sapphire after she doesn't hear her singing. Steven discovers that they are in the hand-shaped ship orbiting above Earth. At the end of a hallway, they then find Lapis Lazuli, imprisoned as well. Before Steven tries to free her, Lapis refuses his assistance as Ruby runs off to go and find Sapphire. Lapis begs Steven not to fight their captors and stays in her cell, not wanting his friends to be hurt anymore, but Steven, promising Lapis he will come back for her, continues down the hallway.

As Steven nears Sapphire's cell, he overhears Jasper ordering Sapphire to stop singing, then ordering Peridot to set a course for the Gem Homeworld, despite her original mission to check up on the Cluster, as Steven (mistaken for being Rose Quartz) is the top priority.

After waiting for Jasper and Peridot to leave Steven approaches Sapphire's cell, he tells her that he likes her singing, and frees her. Sapphire thanks Steven for freeing her. Hearing Ruby call her once more, she grabs Steven's hand, pulling him along too fast for him to touch the ground. Finding Ruby in a large hall, Sapphire drops Steven and she and Ruby reunite, embracing. After reassuring each other of their safety, Sapphire kisses Ruby and they fuse. Steven watches in awe, however it is soon replaced with suprise once the fusion is revealed to be Garnet herself.

Now whole again, Garnet excitedly thanks Steven for reuniting her halves before apologizing that he had to meet them in this situation. He asks if he made a good first impression on Sapphire and Ruby, to which Garnet responds that they already love him. The two then hear Jasper approaching, and so Garnet sends Steven to rescue Pearl and Amethyst and head to the control bridge. She kisses his forehead to give him her future vision for this particular event.

After the crash, it is revealed that Steven saved the Gems using a protective bubble, and Garnet thanks him. Steven says he "can't believe [Garnet is] a fusion all the time!" While Amethyst shows excitement that he met Ruby and Sapphire, Pearl shows dismay at Steven finding out. Garnet explains that she had planned to tell Steven on his birthday.

Suddenly, Jasper breaks out from under part of the destroyed ship and insults the Gems, hypocritically stating that if she had someone to fuse with, she would be able to defeat the Crystal Gems. Lapis Lazuli then breaks out from another part of the ship, revealing herself. After looking about, she attempts to fly away but is restrained by Jasper. As a last resort, Jasper convinces Lapis to fuse with her in an act of revenge for being trapped in Earth for thousands of years, forming the enormous Malachite. However, before she can do harm to the Crystal Gems, Lapis betrays Jasper.
