Student Council Meeting Minutes
May 8, 2013
Called to the order of Katherine S. Li, at 8:20 am in Room 14.
Assembly: Advisors, Officers, SSC, Homeroom Reps.
Present: Mr. Headley, Mrs. Orcutt, Mrs. Reed, Katherine, Arnav, Yichen, Mihir, Morgan, Will, Annie, Mikayla, Saif, Claire, Meghna, Nicole, Homeroom Reps.
1. Last Meeting’s Minutes
a. A motion was made by Athena and seconded by Yuta to approve last meeting’s minutes from April 13, 2013. Motion passed.
2. Dance Feedback
a. CO2 Cannons had flakes
b. Dance cubes were fun, but broke easily
c. Good food selection
3. Walk/Roll to School Day on May 9th
a. Encourage students to Walk/Roll to school to improve the environment
4. Earth Week Results
a. Walk/Bike to School: 1st - Lu, 2nd - Headley, 3rd - Barnes
i. 55% participation
b. Book Exchange: about 30-40 people participated
c. Recycled Art Competition: first place winner displayed in office!
d. Lunchtime Activity - Postponed
5. Earth Week Feedback
a. Positive/Negative things?
i. Really excited about the Recycled Art Competition
ii. Trivia
iii. More advertising for the Book Exchange
iv. Bottles/Cans Recycling
v. Flea Market, exchanging goods
vi. Spirit Day with wearing colors (green, brown, etc.)
6. Free the Children
a. Water Project in Ecuador includes:
i. Hand pump systems
ii. Boredholes and wells
iii. Water catchment systems
iv. The piping of clean water into a school or community
v. Clean water education and sanitation
vi. Hand-washing stations and latrines for schools
b. Funds raised: $3947
c. Goal: $5000
d. Make a check out to Free the Children and put Miller Middle School on the memo
e. Turned in cash to one of the SC Officers/Advisors in an envelope with your name
7. Otterpop Contest on May 8th
a. Big Brown Tables at Lunch
b. Top 10 people will open three otter pops and eat them to win homeroom points.
8. Crazy Hair Day on May 17
a. What counts: wigs, visible color spray, gelled/styled
b. Existing highlights/dyed hair do not count
9. Egg Drop on May 23
a. Must fit in a gallon-sized ziploc bag with homeroom name
b. No parachutes
c. Egg does not to need to be visible
