Hi All,

Last time I was a backup of Eric to organize Miller team, but this time Jenny will have another schedule at same date (12/02), so she is not able to attend the contest. Is there anyone who could help organize Miller team?

Best,
Han(Jenny Wang's mom)

Hi all,

I can help to organize this time. But Susan has to leave around 12:30pm on Sunday before the countdown. If some one could help to get the test papers and solutions, that would be great. I just registered Susan online.

Thanks,
May

Hello All,

Matthew Hase-Liu is participating, but we too might need to leave bit early...
We'd appreciated it very much if someone can organize this time.
Matthew has registered (and paid) already.
Regarding the forming of the team, Pranav and Matthew would like to be in the same team this time.

Thanks,
Miyuki

Hi all,

So far we have 6 kids to participate in the contest from this Yahoo group. They are Matthew, Pranav, Robert, Susan, Mythili, and Angelina, so we can form two teams. Per the rules of this Yahoo group, team formation is by previous test scores. Hopefully we can have 2 more kids to join us.

I will go there before 8:30am to check in for our teams, but I need to leave early ~ 12:30pm. For your convenience, here is the info of the contest schedule and location. See you tomorrow!

Regards,
May

Sorry, Jessica can't make it.
She needs to go to her soccer  game tomorrow. It is the state cup semi final. Her coach would be really mad at her if she didn't show up.

Hi all,

There are 8 kids to form two teams tomorrow. Per the team rules, the two teams will have the following members,

team1:
William
Pranav
Blair
Robert

Team2
Susan
Mythili
Matthew (did not participate last test)
Angelina (did not participate last test)

Matthew's parent expressed the desire to have him in the same team as Pranav. Anyone from Team1 is willing to swap with Matthew, please let his parent or me know. Sorry that I do not have the authority to make the change without parents' agreement.

Regards,
May

I think there is some misunderstanding here.  Matthew's mom was not in the meeting and she thought the members are based on running average.  It is actually the score of the previous test score. It is not like she is trying to bend the rules.  Matthew desired to be with Pranav because they have worked together many times in the past when they worked as a team.

Since Matthew missed the contest Thanksgiving, in this calculation his score is zero so he'll go to team 2.
According to this rule if one misses a contest he/she has no chance to go to team 1 then.

Dear Mr. Liu,

The team formation based on the previous test result is my understanding. It was also how the teams were formed for the November test (see the message below).

Hi All,

11/17 math league contest is coming soon. Please let me know if there is any new student to register except for the 7 registered students mentioned below.  This Thursday I will arrange team based on last contest score according to our rule.

Best,

Han

Of course everything can be interpreted differently from different angle. What I am trying to do is to contribute my share as a team member. I do not gain anything no matter how the teams are formed.

I am willing to relinquish my volunteering position if

1. The team leader, Eric Lin, can clarify the rules and designate the teams. Or,

2. You want to re-form the teams based on the running average.

Hope to hear from one of you before the test.

May,

Thanks for your effort organizing. Yes, we all agree that the team should be base on previous test result. Takyiu also agreed with it in his previous mail. :)
   Thanks.

No, I am not asking to re-form the team.  We agree to the rules that since Matthew did not go to the valley christian he should relinquish to team 2.  It is no big deal at all.  I was just trying to explain that Matthew and Pranav had worked together on many contests before that they desired to work together (in fact beyond just math contests and Math League)

Yes, Pranav and Matthew would like to be in the same team. IMHO I don't think it is
a good idea to enforce these rules on kids and pressure them. They should enjoy what
they are doing and the kids who work well together should be part of the same team
and they should have the freedom to choose.

thanks,
Shree.

It's always a headache to decide how the teams are formed. That's why we make the rules so that the team will be formed automatically.
Shree does have a point. If Matthew and Pranav really want to be in the same team, there should be a mechanism to make it work. I suggest we add this rule:

If 2(or more students) want to be in the same team, they will  use the lowest score of the previous test to form team. In other word, Parnav and Matthew will be scored 0 and they will be in 2nd team.

Do you agree with this ?

Hi All:

How about just use the average to form the team ? Use total score / number of tests attended. So the kids who missed contest will not have problem to merge into the group.

Thanks
Jennifer

OK, I am calling for voting (1) amendment of old rule, and (2) a new rule

(1) use average score of previous tests (of the school year) instead of score of last test
(2) 2(or more) students can use lower score among all of them to form the team(so that they will be in the same team)

Everyone please vote.

How about.... combine those two rules?
Use average score of previous tests of the school year, AND if two or more students can use lower score among all of them to form the team.

Thanks,
Miyuki

I totally agree that mathleague is more a fun activity for kids. We shouldn't have too much "rules" for them.

Use average is not very fair to the kids who make big progress later in the school year.
I agreed whoever want to be in the same team can either form their own team or join the lower score team. For the kid who missed the round can get into the end of the pool.
