Iam trying to 'prepare a form' with a signature and the signature field keeps coming up as a text field. I am using the Add a signature field button (icon looks different in the how to guide than on my version) and the code says Signature1_es_:signer:signature.
....Wow, it is asinine that the solution here is to uncheck the box for the thing I want it to do....
That said, thanks so much for sharing this. Also solved my misery as well. Sure seems like an obvious problem for Adobe to fix.
In the current version of Acrobat (whatever is most recent for April 2024), I found that clicking Prepare a Form and then leaving the "This document requires signatures" box unchecked resulted in being able to use the standard signature form fields.
UPDATE 2024 (as the selected solution is outdated and doesn't work): In Acrobat, you must convert to the old version of Acrobat first by going to File > Disable New Acrobat. This didn't automatically work on my document, however, and I had to unfortunately recreate the PDF/prepare the form again once in the old version of acrobat. Also, this is mentioned below, but also make sure to NOT check the "This document requires signatures" box when preparing the form.
I have a PDF with a signature form field. I click the field and sign/save the document. The signature shows up in the Signature Panel, and the blue "Signed and all signatures are valid." banner appears up top. When the PDF is closed and re-opened, the signature disappears from the Signature Panel and the signature text disappears. The form field is still there but hidden until it's moused over.
So, I opened both your original "PDF Final" document and compared the Document Properties against my edited copy, and indeed, the Type 1 Font was not substituted nor embedded ... everything just disappeared (and I also opened the same test file with a web browser and nothing there).
The PdfDocumentBuilder creates a new document with no pages or content. First, for text content, a font must be registered with the builder. Currently this supports Standard 14 fonts provided by Adobe by default and TrueType format fonts.
My main question is if you had PDF that was created in Acrobat first with a digital signature field using the Prepare Form tool; and then you signed the PDF document immediately before PdfPig produced the final PDF document?
For some of these I'll skip the clicking the field phase and just add the digital signature directly with the .NET tool, and those ones work fine. The signatures persist after closing/re-opening. Also, if I omit the form field and sign via the Certificates tool instead, that also persists after closing/re-opening. So that'll be the fallback option.
This results in a number of errors in Final.pdf, too, a garbage-in, garbage-out situation. All one can blame Adobe Acrobat for in this context, is that it attempts to sign this broken structure instead of rejecting it.
"Printing" a PDF, even "as an Adobe PDF", automatically removes digital signatures. Depending on the field flags, it may leave the signature appearance in the file. But the resulting PDF is not protected by a digital signature anymore.
Thanks for sharing, I was not aware. I just needed to save the file to an archive and the signature remained on the PDF with the notations that it was signed digitally. I can understand how that would not be sufficient in other situations.
One of the user forgot his digital signature password.
Is it possible to reset / recover password of digital signature in Acrobat Pro v9.1?
Or what is the best thing that can be done in this case.
Pulled the ssd into an external bay, luckily was able to browse the disk just fine. Recovered all his files and got him a new Samsung 860 pro and installed fresh copy of windows 7 and restored his documents.
At this point I need help with one of two things, either fix this ssd up to boot, so I can get into adobe and extra the digital signature, OR since I can browse the ssd, extract adobe and copy it over to a vm with Windows 7 on it, and then extract the digital signatures.
Only 2 signature / initial images can be stored currently. Every time I want another signature I have to swap out an existing image for one from my files. It would be hugely beneficial to be able to maintain a much larger selection of stored signatures / initials for completing documents for multiple members of the household.
Hey Adobe - When I asked a chat agent about this today, they told me to download & use the 32-bit version of Acrobat because it allowed more than 2 signatures. Is this really the only solution that Adobe can provide?
Come on Adobe - how hard is it to allow people to have multiple signatures for different purposes? A limit of two is way TOO restrictive! Maybe NitroSign is the only solution as it offers unlimited signatures!
A really good workaround, until Adobe addresses this issue, was posted by Alexander Brusilovsky on September 6, 2022. It takes some editing of the signature images, they must be png files, but it works! Thanks, Alexander!
Here is his comment: Use the "Stamps" from the "Comments" tool. Add a custom stamp to create a 2nd or 3d, +, signature if you need and follow the instructions. You need to size your signature when inserting or size it in prior to importing it to Stamps. The file must be in png, with no background (transparent) format. (basically the same as the "add sign" with a bit more effort)
This is still an issue for me regularly. I use the initials space as a second signature in Acrobat, which is somewhat helpful, but that messes up My initials when someone sends me something in Adobe Sign. A solution for this would be very welcome!

I lost a lot of time trying to research how to do it and am appalled that there is no way to save more than one signature and one set of initials in a so called professional software. I guess I have to start searching for an alternative.
There are only 2 options for fill and sign: signature and initials. I manage the affairs of several of my older relatives, my spouse, businesses etc. I need to have more than 2 such options. I was hoping the paid version would, but it does not! Which is most unfortunate!
It's "UNDER REVIEW", which means Adobe did the most they are willing to: they marked it as being reviewed and forgot about it. That's how they operate, judging by all the other topic in this farce they call "UserVoice".
Hi, may I know the "outcome" of the review to my request initiated on the 5th of January 2018? It's been "a while"... I think the request has warranted a decent address with the number of votes and comments!

Second: so now that I cannot edit my previously existing forms I started creating new ones. I added both a signature field and a signature block but they are both acting like a text box instead of a signature. I can type my name in but it previously used to ask for my digital id password. It is very odd.
If you really did add a signature block, you were in the form editing mode for creating an Adobe Sign compatible form. You cannot add digital signature fields in this mode. the "signature" fields are actually text fields that have specialized behavior when use with Adobe Sign. If you want to use digital signatures, you can select "More > Revert to Acrobat Form" when in form editing mode.
If you want to have a regular classic signature, when intially saving the pdf, DO NOT select, this document has signatures. It will essentially break the signature field and require you to use Adobe Sign
I was having the same problem - and tearing my hair out - and then realized that my print screen for my printer was set to the default of "Document" under "Comments and Forms". When I pulled down that menu to "Documents and Stamps", I was able to print with the signature.
I was having the same problem... Unfortunately the 'Documents and Stamps' menu option didn't work for me either. I eventually had to get a bit more creative and go outside of acrobat. I opened the file in photoshop and printed it from there. Printed perfectly with the signature on it. I tried every option I could think of inside of Acrobat first, and nothing worked. Even saving the file as an image from Acrobat didn't work. Photoshop worked fine though It's entirely possible that other InDesign or something else may work as well, but I just got it to work in Photoshop and didn't test further.
After hours of trying to print with a verified signature (it's insane to see on the screen the verified signature and after printing it disappearing...) I tried the following and succeeded: (I don't know if it will work on your pc)
- there... I made it yesterday night, after spending 8 hours at a official office waiting for my time and thinking about this, and did it today again to be sure that it works (this time without my id card)
The resolution to this issue is to make sure while in the print mode under "Comments & Forms", it is set to either "Document and Markups" or "Document and Stamps", and not just set to "Document". This will resolve the issue of not being able to print digital signatures. If it does not resolve your issue, the problem may lie somewhere else in either your system, printer, or print settings.
On Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 18.9.20050.254034, right-click on the digital signature and select "Show Signed Version", as Paulo had pointed out, and the signed version view of the PDF document will open in a new tab. Print that document (the signed version one). And voila! You'll have the lovely green tick printed on your document!
