You may have noticed a distinct dropoff in updates to the
system.
There is a reason.
Many people with large rounds are being over whelmed by the number
of changes their new customers are demanding.
Also many people are aware that they face competition from on-line
ordering systems.
I am addressing both of these shortfalls.
Development 1 - Multi User Server.
This is a cloud based server which will serve data to yourself and
your customers via a smart phone app.
The server could be from one of the many cloud hosting companies.
Just who is unimportant at his time.
It could also be a spare computer or a Raspberry Pi machine
running at your premises if you are concerned about data security
or
low internet bandwidth/latency.
The app will improve data security as data will be shared between
all user PC's.
Once we have working experience of multi user working we will move
on to the next stage.
It is hoped that the Raspberry Pi solution (hosted by me) will be
available for testing (not using) in the near future.
The Raspberry Pi solution should not be dismissed out of hand. It is cheap but for the most part is only has to supply small amounts of data which it will be held in memory. Form the average dairy customer access will not be above 100 customers/day.
Even with a cloud base server if your internet fails the system
will revert back to a single user on the master user's machine.
Development 2 - Smart Phone Based App.
Here your customer will install an App on their phone. They enter
a code which identify s your dairy as their
supplier and after entering their email address, can then edit
their order updating your data at the same time.
This presents some challenges:-
There will be a need to present a more unified approach to the
presentations of items you sell.
Items for sale should have correct spelling and be presented in an
understandable order.
Also because a lot of your suppliers are small they will not have
access to the product images (thumbnails) that will be needed for
the new app to rival apps from the larger sellers.
A lot to go at.
