For users looking to generate complex routes using specific addresses (similar to Google Maps functionality) and bring them into
https://www.map.army, we recommend the following workflow:
Phase 1: Generate the Route as a KML file- Create a new map at Google My Maps (https://mymaps.google.com).
- Use the Add Directions tool to input your addresses (up to 10 points).
- In the map menu (three dots), select Export to KML/KMZ.
- Important: Select the route layer and check "Export as KML instead of KMZ".
Phase 2: Import and Convert in Map.ArmyOnce you have your file, move to the tactical planning environment:
- Launch https://www.map.army.
- Load KML: Go to the "Layers" menu and Load the KML as a Vector Layer.
- Convert to MilX: To make the route editable within the military symbology framework convert the Vector Layer to MilX.
- Cleanup: You can now Delete the original Vector Layer to keep your workspace clear.
Phase 3: Tactical RefinementYour route is now a MilX object. You can:
- Adjust individual waypoints to align with tactical terrain.
- Add military symbols such as Start Points (SP), Checkpoints (CP) and Release Points (RP).
Tip: If you have more than 10 waypoints, you can create multiple direction layers in Google My Maps and export them together.
