Stand proudly on the shoulders of your ancestors for you have truly made a foundation for the next. There is no higher honor for community organizers. I am grateful to have seen your work first-hand and played a small part as PIA leader invited to work with you all as a member of ETB-EPA.

Greetings YUCA Family and Friends!

On May 11, 2012, the City of East Palo Alto received exciting news!  It was awarded a $1,000,000 grant from California's Strategic Growth Council to revise our General Plan!  This award presents an opportunity for the City of EPA to look at our planning comprehensively, with environmental health and climate action lenses in mind, and make real the dreams of OUR city! This grant to the City could not have come at a more critical time, as it provides much needed resources to make the process to revise our General Plan real, meaningful, and intentional.

One of the main criteria that set our City apart was highlighting their collaboration with community, particularly YUCA and our coalition, Empower-Transform-Build East Palo Alto.  For three years, the ETB-EPA Coalition led a planning process that involved hundreds of community members, resulting in a vision for the area where Romic, a negligent toxic waste facility, was once located.   That work came from the heels of a 20 year campaign to shut down Romic, valiantly led by young people and elders in our community.  In the last year, we have worked towards building a General Plan Coalition that includes the Senior Advisory Committee.  We constructed, presented to the Planning Commission, and administered a city-wide questionnaire.  This questionnaire provided important information from the community that will assist in framing General Plan community engagement process.  We have also held numerous working meetings with the City's Planning Manager.  We are thrilled that our work with the City has garnered resources to see the General Plan through, and we look forward to continue to being a partner!
This makes this particular point in history pretty exciting and unique from other cities' efforts to revise their General Plan.  Why?  Because it was our longtime fight for environmental justice that led to this moment.  Even the previous General Plan adopted by the City in 2000 created their vision around Romic.  But with Romic gone, we all seized the opportunity to imagine something bigger.  Scaling these efforts to create what we want for our entire city will be even more challenging.

But we're up for it!

We look forward to the General Plan revision process for the entire city in the next couple of years.  We at YUCA have been gearing up for this, and we hope to engage our entire community to translate our dreams for our city into reality. We're proud of YOU, East Palo Alto!

If you want to get involved with the process, please do not hesitate to call YUCA and ask for Anna at (650)322-9165.

With much respect,
The YUCA Team
