By the way a good alternative to DropBox is http://owncloud.org/
support for SFTP is there.

Yes, we did look at ownCloud before deciding to roll our own, and it does seem to be nice and efficient. One of the big turn-offs, however, was the long list of security vulnerabilities:
 http://owncloud.org/about/security/advisories/
We could maybe have reused only the low-level sync parts to avoid all the web interface issues, but it did not seem to be much more work to start from scratch.
