MIGRATION: A TOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT Migration as grown into a global phenomenon that needs a new set of progressive immigration policies, which recognise people’s right to mobility. This includes reducing and regularising visa procurement. Government create more legal ways for migration. The human rights of irregular migrants are also important here even when arrested by the destination country. Government must work to ensure that decent working condition exist in Nigeria so that potential migrants have the option to migrate or not. In this case the decision to migrate becomes a genuine choice. However, some people have migrated through legal means, while others have done so in a horrible manner. Daily images are portrayed of the different accounts of the terrible realities facing thousands of youths of Nigerian descent staking attempts at findings the so called GREENER PASTURES in the western countries. This call for more questions on why this situation is like that. What are the driving elements and what can be done to develop a partnership that can save the thousands of lives that are lost through migration? Lukman A. If we continue to push the blames on the government, we might end up
takin g an endless journey round a circle - we shall always land on
the same shore.
Frustration has more often than not been identified to be the reason
behind most illegal migration. Having known this fact, Nigerian youths
should plan for their futures ahead in time and not leave their
tomorrow in the hands of government or parents. If they do and
government or parents could not meet up, frustration sets in.
We well know what our youths are capable of doing. For as much as we
say people undergo much stress while going for visas to a foreign
country, we should carefully note that there are a group of travellers
who don't go through visa stress at simply because of their travel
reasons, example are those going for a short conference. Those
westerners are good managers of their resources, so they wont
distribute visas to non citizens indiscriminately. We should not also
forget that our dear country does not have a good name with them, so
why the stress.
My advice to fellow nigerian youths is; the time to guard against
frustration is now, when we have our futures in our hands and can make
good plans for ourselves. Its high time we stopped writting CVs but
accepting them.(by this i mean, we should think of things to do that
will make us employers of labour. We dont have to take up white collar
jobs to be successful.). We do not necessarily have to start big.
Forget not that in a little while, with concerted effort, the little
one shall become a nation! PEACE
