We have a 15yr old admiral 410L fridge freezer in the garage and its inside temperature during the last few months has varied greatly +-5C from the setting it should be at 4C
is it posiible or even worth bothering to get a fridge repairman to have a look at it or should we just ask the council to pick it up on their next large appliance cleanup day?

How is the insulation/door lining?
If that is tatty that may be a relatively easy fix to your issue.
If it is a motor or coolant problem, it may not be worth it.

the door lining is quite OK .. i guess that means the fridge is a dead duck :-(
It's a case of how long is a piece of string. Without seeing it 's very difficult to guess as to what's wrong with it.
Does it run all the time, does it ice up on one part of the coil, has it been getting slowly worse or is it erratic? Is it frost free or not frost free there's a million questions to narrow down the solution. For a fridgy to look at it and give you a quote I'd reckon it'd cost you about $80 depending on how hard it is to diagnose.
Depends on how much you plan to spend on a new replacement...
You could take the opportunity to upgrade, or simply buy a more energy efficient model. You might be surprised at how much more energy the old fridge consumes compared to a newer model. (It is 15 years old after all).
On the other hand, you might not want to spend up big. You might be lucky and it is only a cheap repair job.
I'll be upgrading my fridge in a year or so (I want a bottom mount/upside down fridge)

We got one of those, i have samsung 551L one in pewter finish, very nice fridge, comes with a water dispenser built into the door!
water dispenser built into the door!
Is that connected to the water supply, and did you need a plumber to connect it in?
Or is there a big plastic tank that you fill up occasionally? (And does it do ice as well?)

Nope not water supply, you fill it up, u can fill it up with coke/pepsi, wine, beer and of course water!!
In the frezzer the ice dispenser is place at the top, very good position. It is the one where u slide the ice try off, fill with water slide back in, then after a couple of hours when the ice is frozen u twist the plastic handle clockwise and the ice falls into a container which u can pull out to get the ice from.

The thermostat needs replacing... The bi-metallic strip has done it's job and is now too soft to accurately control the temperature. Find out the cost of a new thermostat. That will help make your decision ;-)
Edit: Or it may also just need re-gassing - EXPENSIVE now because of new refrigerant gas that must be put in!

Why do people post that have NO knowledge of a subject? NO fridges use a bimetallic thermostat except as heater safetys. It could be anything based on the info given.

The current refrigerants are drop in and would cost sfa more than the original R12 for a charge in a domestic fridge.
BTW goodguys is shit- no where near to match that deal!
Sometimes they get a particular model that noone else can get or they buy a large amount of them at a greatly reduced price. Usually only one or two models.
I have found the Good Guys cheap and they will match most things if not better than HN. We just bought a fridge and front load washing machine from them. Wangled a good deal.

Could be a faulty thermostat i would get someone to check it out if thats all thats the problem. A damn site cheaper than a new fridge
Without much knowledge, I crossed my fingers and replaced the thermostat with a generic one for $30.
Its the only (cheap) fix you can do yourself, so its worth a try.
Fixed the problem with my 10yo fridge.
Otherwise, I would have thought that if it is a second or 'beer fridge' in the garage, as long as it kept the beer/food cold enough (Crank the thermostat to minimum?) you'd put up with its quirks until it failed.
15 year old fridge, dump the crap. Get with the times :)
Now that's the sort of ignoramus comment I'd expect from someone with little knowledge about so called 'old things'.
Old fridges are in fact better than many so called 'new and fantastic' stuff.
Their motors were wound to a decent standard and will not fail after 8 years like most so called 'modern' fridges.
I was told by a fridge mechanic a few years ago that you cannot buy a fridge in Australia with a motor that was created here anymore - apparently they are wound and made OS now and to a minimum spec too :-(
If the seals are ok then see if you can get someone to give you a quote first before repairing it - unlikely, but it may be worth asking.
I had an old fridge (GE) and the heating element went in it. The service guy took apart the heating element and because the break was very close to the end, he stretched the heater coil a tad and reconnected it - thus saving me about $80 at the time - that's the difference a good trades person can make versus just a part swapper.
That thing went for another 6 years before the case rusted through - and the fridge was already 20 years old - no new fridge is going to get even close to lasting 25+ years - so much for new stuff being better!
New is not automatically better than old...
