Hi everyone,

I’d like to start the conversation to start nailing down which versions of software we use that we will support.

On mifos.org ( http://www.mifos.org/developers/install-mifos/install-windows ) we list:
    - Java 2 Standard Edition Development Kit (JDK) 5.0 version 1.5.0_X
      - My SQL Version 5.0
      - Tomcat 6
      - Apache Ant 1.7.0 or later

And I believe for clients we only support IE 6.0.

A few questions:
  1. Do we want to mention some specific versions of MySQL and Tomcat? (Aka, 5.0.16 and higher, or just 5.0?)
  2. Not as worried about the JDK and ANT, as there’s a good chance these requirements will change when we offer a built version of Mifos
  3. Are there other versions of MySQL and Tomcat we’d like to support?

Cheers,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

We faced issues with some of the minor releases of MySQL when used with MIFOS.

The details of the issues were discussed in the threads below
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.finance.mifos.devel/4016/
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.finance.mifos.devel/4018/

On investigating we found that there were were changes in how MySQL compares dates, which caused the error
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.finance.mifos.devel/4245/

So, for MySQL releases between 5.0.41(including) to 5.0.51a(excluding) there are issues and causes MIFOS to throw error when it loads.
It will helpful If this can be documented in the software version support documents.

I think that Amir's on the right track with specifying minimum point version if issues are known.

In my view production implementations should be running JRE and not JDK.

I accept for the moment that there are problems with Firefox, but believe that the product should not be restricted to IE 6.0.

There will be more clients than servers and there are good cost savings to be made by using, for example, pre-loved PIIIs or low-spec P4s with Linux and a Free Software browser.

Regards
Graeme

Hi everyone-

The official page for software versions is at http://www.mifos.org/developers/wiki/MifosSystemRecommendationsV11 .  We are working on cleaning up on-line documentation so that there is not conflicting information.

The wiki page above includes the MySQL 5 version we have found to be the most stable- 5.0.51b.  We only suggest IE 6 for now, as there are some key flow that only work in IE 6 in Mifos v1.1.  We agree that supporting Firefox is important for the reasons Graeme mentioned, and is something we plan to tackle soon.

Good point on the JRE vs. the JDK.  I will look into this and update the systems recommendations page accordingly.

Thanks,

Beth

We have no recommendation for a more specific version of Tomcat?  Any version of Tomcat 6 will work?

Ryan

      - Tomcat 6
      - Apache Ant 1.7.0 or later

The test team has been testing with version 6.0.16 during the v1.1 project, so I would recommend that version.
