Mifos Devs and Community of Users

Just checking, cause I think the answer is no:  Is Mifos running a separate github fork downstream of the Fineract(R) project?

As discussed at the Fineract project, we want to encourage everyone to be building from fineract releases, or from the tip ( dev branch).  Note that Apache Fineract(R) is a registered trademark of the Apache Software Foundation.

When we (mifos) decided to donate our code - the backend to mifosX - to Apache, and rename it Apache Fineract, we wanted to gain the benefit of a larger community whilst building this one.   To do that, I would argue that we must, at Mifos, make sure that the language we use is consistent.

Mifos is a community, a non-profit of that name, and has a set of projects, all of which relate - in some way - to the Apache Fineract(R) project. This of course, makes sense, given the long history.  Mifos also bundles Fineract with the Mifos AdminUI into "MifosX" consistent with the Apache 2.0 license (permissive) as well as releasing other bundles like Gazelle.

At times it seems to me that new devs or users come to the project without this understanding and I think we need to do better to explain the nomenclature.

As the creator of this project in 2001, I am proud of the accomplishments, and as we continue to move this forward, I would like to make sure that Mifos remains viable as a bundler of the Apache Fineract(R) project and also clear with its community as to where and how the software is roadmapped, produced, tested, and released.

Thank you

James Dailey

I mention this because some of you may not know who I am:

Hello sir James Daily
My name is Jaime Imperial and I just download mifos 12.24.12 and installed it in Ubuntu 24.04. While installation was successful, I was not able to login the first time, using the default login credentials.  user - mifos and password -= password. I have searched the mifos forums but was unable to find any solution to this problem. I have also posted my problem to the mifos user forum but until now I have not gotten any reply.
Am sorry, but I have nowhere else to go. Reading your posts, I know that you're one of those technically well verse with mifos.. So I am reaching out to you for any possible help.
Am attaching the login error screenshot for reference.
thank you and more power.

Jaime

Due to the volume of emails, I cannot respond to all requests.
You may want to look at the mifos sponsored slack channels.

Hello Terence Montiero
Thanks for your advice, Previously, I was able to install mifosx using tomcat-10/v10.1.30  .. Right now this link is dead as I noticed that in Index of /tomcat/tomcat-10, the latest available version is now tomcat-10.1.39..I tried installing mifos with this version but i encountered an error. Is this version 10.1.39 not compatible with mifosx .24.12.24?
Error as reflected in catalina.log is 1-Mar-2025 09:22:58.687 SEVERE [main] org.apache.catalina.startup.HostConfig.deployWAR Error deploying web application archive [/usr/share/tomcat10/webapps/>
        java.lang.IllegalStateException: Error starting child

Thank you.

Hi Jaime,

I've been involved with Mifos for over 2 decades, through its transition from mifos 1.x to Mifos X and now also a Fineract PMC member.

Firstly, request you to create a separate thread with the relevant subject for your request.

Secondly, @Ed Cable is probably your best resource person who has been driving the Mifos community during the past decade at least.

Third, if you want a quick instance of Mifos, you should probably share more context.
 1. Do you want a quick instance of Mifos? You can get that by filling a form and applying for Mifos Trial instance. If you wait a few weeks, you should even get the latest version 24.
 2. What steps did you try so far? Did you download latest Mifos from mifos.org website clicking "Get Mifos" or another source?

Regards,
Terence Monteiro.

Hi Terence Monteiro
Thanks for your prompt reply. The Apache Tomcat ver 10.1 is actually the version mentioned in this installation instructions step 2. https://mifosforge.jira.com/wiki/spaces/docs/pages/4229300375/Mifos+X+Platform+24.12.24+-+Installation+Instructions+on+Linux+Ubuntu+24.04+LTS

Yeah, am actually helping out a small rural bank here in Philippines evaluate a core banking system for their use.
Regards.

Jaime,

I highly recommend you opt for version 24 or the one prior to it. This is the supported version and offers you the best chances of getting support from the larger community. If you have experience with Docker, setup should be a breeze for a demo. If you are a Mifos partner and provide (or want to provide in future) Mifos services, you can even buy a PaaS of Mifos from the Azure marketplace. Version 10.xx looks very old to me. Where did you get it from?

Regards,
Terence Monteiro.
