Kojo,

Here's a bit more background on Oleg and support from FINA.

So just to confirm on our call from this morning - where you had serious concerns about his technical skills are these more about the Java or BI-level as well?

Your comment from Melange read: "Oleg comes across as being technically adequate but not diligent. That is a a huge red flag for me"

which had led me to believe he wasn't as weak technically.

Dear Ed,

Oleg is 2nd year teenager student in University. Reason why we selected him is that he is very motivated guy. We are  doing allot of trainings for him and  he is progressing …  We ( I and our developers  ) will support him .  We have assigned 2nd person with him.  Please consider that having Oleg in the team you have Me, Nick (our System Architect) , Sasha (Senior Java Developer) and Beka (another intern).

Oleg knows Mifos functionality , contributing in Mifos through Jira , Doing Reports in Pentaho,  Working on Github, Participating in the meeting – these are not full List of the achievements he did during last 6 months.   I know he does not have enough  experience in Java Script / Angular but  we will help him to learn it … May be it was our mistake when we asked  him to be focused on Pentaho Report designer .

If you will give him (and us) chance we will do our best not to disappoint you .  Please take my promise and reference to Oleg  into account.   Help us to  grow his motivation and to have an experienced belanguage (Russian & English) Mifos developer.

Thanks.

Kakha

Kakha,

Sorry that I hadn't responded to this yet. Been busy preparing for our board meeting and  little behind in email.

We are still in the process of evaluating students for Google Summer of Code so I can't guarantee that he will get selected as we have limited slots and a strong group of applicants.

I do hope that if Oleg isn't selected as an intern that he can still be a contributor to the community.

If he is selected, that will be very helpful to have that support network who can serve as additional mentors to Oleg.

Concerning tasks, we would have Oleg on a Pentaho-related task but it would be specifically in line to the project idea that we've scoped out for the ad-hoc drag and drop reporting - https://mifosforge.jira.com/wiki/display/RES/Google+Summer+of+Code+2014+Ideas#GoogleSummerofCode2014Ideas-Web-basedAdHocQueryandReportingTool

If he was to complete that early we certainly could scope out other tasks he can work on.

Ed

Hello  Ed,

We will support Oleg  with following:

1.       He can use all his time for Mifos@GSOC project

2.       On addition we are assigning 2nd person to Mifos@GSOC tasks;

3.       And finally Nick (our System Architect) and Sasha (Senior Java Developer) will help OLEG;

What we need is to coordinate our tasks.  We think that Oleg can be effective in:

1.        Pentaho Reporting – regulatory reporting and

2.       Java Script -  tasks we need for Lao and Georgian projects ( add some fields for Pawn shop)  , you can see his contribution on Jira;

Do you have same  view on that ?

Can we talk  about it?

Best

Kakha

Hi Oleg,

Thanks for following up. Kojo will be doing one of your interviews. Are you available Monday morning local time? I think Kojo has availability during his Sunday evening.

I've cc'd Kojo and he will coordinate the time with you.

It also wasn't in your proposal - what year in school you're currently enrolled in. Could you share with us what year, major, and school you're at currently as well as what your school schedule is like?

Thanks,

Ed

Hello Mr.Cable,

Please accept my sincerest apologies, I was unable to respond your mail in time, because I was busy finishing important tasks in FinA. I have an agreement with FinA that If I will be accepted on this project I will devote my full-time to Mifos X project. We can do interviews on any day, at any preferable time for mentors, except this saturday.

My timezone is (UTC +04:00) Tbilisi.

Hello Oleg,

Thanks again for applying to Mifos for the 2014 Google Summer of Code.

Based on the quality of your application and proposal, your overall experiences, and the interactions and contributions you've made to the community thus far, we'd like to hold a set of two interviews to learn more about you and further discuss your project proposal.

One of the things we wanted to further explore during these interviews was how a potential Summer of Code internship will affect your ongoing role with FINA - are you already working in a full-time capacity for FINA?

You will do two separate 30-minute interviews with different mentors via Skype.  The interview will cover a range of more qualitative and behavioral questions about your background as well as why you'd like to be part of the Mifos community. We want to make sure you'll be a good fit for the project and that you'll have the time commitment throughout the entire program.

It will also give us a chance to further vet you technically regarding any aspects of your proposal or previous projects you've worked on.

This will also be your chance to ask us any questions to learn more about our community and project as a hole.

Could you let me know some possible dates/times you are available between now and April 9 for these interviews?

Thanks,

From Oleg's proposal he seemed technically adequate but my interview with him did not corroborate that.

I am rather uncomfortable with the involvement of Fina. It seems rather overbearing than helpful to me. One such overbearing request was that Kakha wanted to join the interview - which I refused. I think a student should be able to hold his own this kind of involvement could lead to a complicated mentoring relationship.
