Ok, I have a family member with a _major_ cell phone reception
problem. They're in a rural location and something happened with the
cell tower they're grabbing this week. The phone (a Galaxy S) has an
antenna port on it. What kind of pigtail would that take, and about
what length of wire? I'm assuming a regular wire twist would work
(which, given I know little about cell frequencies, might _not_ be the
right thing). Any suggestions appreciated.

Its like a ipx but usually they are down in the phone. Think you might want to try a booster first.

What carrier? If they have ATT and an internet connection, an ATT microcell might not be a bad start.

You would need a pigtail to fit the antenna port behind the battery cover and a cell antenna. Did this will an old phone before, but it was a Nokia :D

Also this form does not recommend using the antenna port on the Nexus S. Seems the port breaks very easily.

I agree on the microcell/femtocell - and some carriers will give away the device if you are on the fringe of a cell.
