Hi all,
No I am not asking anything illegal here, what I want to do is use an existing burglar alarm and either add a way for it to email or text me when it shows activity or to replace the central control unit with a PI or Arduino to do the same thing (but still use existing keypad, sensors, etc)
I have been burglarized two times in the past 5 weeks, but HATE the idea of paying for monitoring I can do myself.
Anyone have any ideas or know of a web site having info on doing this. I have looked, but I can't seem to find anything on burglar alarm hacking or burglar alarm keypad hacking.

I am an alarm technician. That is actually something I have been working on as well. What sort of panel do you have access to?

Hey Daniel
If you have a land line you could use a basic stamp to phone you as it’ll generate the DTMF tones to do the dialing and to generate various tones or sounds that represent what is going on back home. Do a Google search for “basic stamp II application notes 2” and look for chapter 3 Phoneline Interface or copy and paste the following URL into your browser.
There are GSM cell phone “shields” for the Arduino that support SMS but I’m not familiar with them. Perhaps it is possible to hack a cheap cell phone to call you?
Good luck with it Daniel.
