Wife and I got an iRobot Roomba a coupla years ago. We have two big-ass dogs and their hair has overwhelmed it, so it doesn't really work well anymore as a vacuum (the gearbox has a big problem with hair and dust gumming up the works), but if any one is interested in robotics or think they can use it, lemmie know and I'll stick on my porch for pickup.

I'd be tempted to see how well I could take it apart and clean it, see
if I could get it working. Unfortunately I have two cats that shed a
lot, so it wouldn't do well in my house either. I had to buy a Dyson
to keep up with those two...

I'd love to play around with one. Step one: give it a Cylon LED display...

I'd be happy to take that off your hands!  When could I pick it up?

Any time really. I'll go box it up. Gimmie a shout at 901-412-5997

We ended up with a Dyson, too. I think the Roomba is apparently more for cleaner people than us. To keep up with the dog hair we'd have to run the thing almost daily, and clean the gearbox often. We replaced the gearbox, actually, once too, after the plastic gears wore down too much. It's actually more work to have the robot do it than to just use the regular ole vacuum.

Cleaning a Roomba goes a long ways toward getting them going again, but
the little square-drive on the end of the beater bar rounds off and the
gears do wear as well, so those just have to be treated as consumables.
I have 3 dogs that go in and out regularly and the Roombas (2 on
staggered schedules) can keep up but only if you schedule them to do it
often (Mine run twice daily) and empty them between runs, but since
they're robots, they don't mind repetitive work. I have 2 docked under
my desk so it's easy to just empty the bins when I come home from work.
I use the handheld remote to call them out for a quick dump then send
them back to their docking station under the desk
A fun project I've thought about would be a system to add a central vac
to the docking station to empty them on demand then add that to their
program then they'd be able to run for months unattended.
