Subject: Slope Soaring site - Newark, OH

Good Morning;

  Well over a decade ago now during a stay with family in the Buckeye Lake area I managed to connect with R/C soaring pilots who were slope soaring at a location on the outskirts of Newark.  That was back in the days when a gentleman named Tom Nagel was routinely contributing to the RC Soaring Digest publication.

  I still spend time with family there in Ohio, and of late have been bringing along my thermal duration sailplane and winch (I'm a member of the Fairfield Ohio Radio Kontrol Society), but there are times when there is not room in the car for all of that gear.  On the other hand it would be easy to toss a small foamy slope model in the car.

  Do you have any idea whether that slope site is still accessible and pilots on occasion can be found flying there?  I fear development (and of course the new flight restrictions for FRIA's and similar) may have 'killed' that opportunity.

Thank you in advance,
Dave Stack

Gil,

I’ll reply to the person that pinged you. Yes we use to fly slope out in Newark behind the Owen’s Corning Fiberglass plant. Andy Litsky and Tom Nagel were big proponents of that slope… I have been there when Don Harris, Gavin, Skye and Greg Bell flew at the site. Ron Mong, Garrett and Cooper were there watching.

I can’t say we have had a good slope day in years.

With a south wind, Brookville Dam in Indiana used to be the go to slope soaring site years ago.  Frankfort KY used to have a good slope too.  But this was over 20 years ago.  Any up tp date info???

I tried to fly the dam over at C.J. Brown Reservoir in Springfield a couple years ago.  I was told that state park dams are no fly zones since the Twin Towers incident.  I was told that the rangers would impound the aircraft if they caught you.  I haven't heard differently since then.

Best regards,
