As I have stated before (here) I started on Steam but you can drop Steam and keep the Steam account as I have done. John Rochard was a Steam account but has been converted by visiting the Eve Online homepage and changing the account from there.
I am old as dirt. I use to play games by booting DOS from a floppy disk, then insert the game and run it from the floppy drive. Before that my first PC used a magnetic tape drive. My first modem was 2400 baud. o7
I garuntee you do. You log onto the EVE even launcher to add an account with one username/password combination. You can also log onto steam with a username and password to get a token that is passed to the launcher, which adds the same account. Either work. The only way you do not have two unique usernames and passwords is if you are using the same username for your eve (ccp) account as your steam account.
My home computer game habit pre-dates the PC - loading from audio tape onto Commodore PETs. A rather good version of Space Invaders.
The first PC I used ran GEM rather than PCDOS.
I remember going from 300 baud modems to 1200 baud modems and cursing text that appeared on the paper roll faster than you could read it.
Over the next 6 years I went back to school and got my Bachelors of Science in Computer Science. To be honest, it felt odd being older than everyone else in class. I excelled at my programming courses with my knowledge of computers.
My wife is using an old HP laptop, all she does is Facebook and games. She also watches too much of those crime shows with the super cops solving crimes with the sci-fi computers. She has no desire to learn about computers other than how to turn it on and off.
I think I saw the documentary about this on YouTube recently, some procedurally generated space game that ran on the computers at schools that had been bought by the government. Looks like it was a gem ahead of its time.
A generation of computer literate programmers and hackers that founded a lot of the early software and games companies. That created new worlds, new industries. Tomb Raider, GTA, and many more are the children of that generation.
My own disclaimer: I bought the game on Steam after 2 days of troubleshooting. Lo and behold, the Steam version works perfectly. In other words, the problem is not my PC, it's the Epic version. I could've skipped all this trouble lol.
I actually just got my account approved and was going to post about this exact issue. There are tons of posts on the Long Dark subreddit about this and does not seem like an isolated issue at all. I've tried everything under the sun just like you did with no progress. I also opened a ticket within their support system 12 days ago but I still have not gotten a response.
We are investigating this issue, and we certainly want to help as many players as possible and be as transparent as possible. Did the OP manage to get into game? It seems this has been going on for a long time, can see threads on steam, reddit, hinterland (I'm Epic myself) and various other places going back at least 2 years.
So, I am somewhat active on the Discord for TLD (which is completely unrelated to Hinterland whatsoever), but we get a lot of new folks joining asking about the Epic version of getting stuck on the loading/warning screens.
I own the game on Steam, but while I had the brief issue (might have been based on the fact that I play on Linux), things were sorted out quickly. Hinterland, could you please state if this is an Epic issue or a Hinterland issue with which you're working with Epic?
I've been trying to point out links here, but there have been folks who can reinstall, or uninstall DLC/start the game/reinstall DLC, and various other workarounds that only sometimes work. I have recently been suggesting everyone submit a ticket, but if anyone official could posit a response more so that would exemplify what to do, that'd be GLORIOUS!
I don't even get why they can't just remove the disclaimer screen. At this point it's 2023.... People know the game isn't real life and people know epilepsy exists and a miniscule fraction of those with it can be triggered by screens/media.... Literally it's unnecessary covering of the gluteus maximus to be honest. Just put a few lines of text on the store page for the game, job/obligation done/fulfilled.

But driving with the keyboard really sucks (or I suck at driving with the keyboard, whatever), so I want to use my Steam controller - only thing that works out of the box seems to be left trigger = right click = middle finger. I guess that's very saying for my experience so far with getting to play :)
So yeah, my question is - is there a way to make it work? I have tried adding both GTA5.exe and PlayGTA5.exe files with "-EpicPortal" [as non-Steam game]. The first one seems to do absolutely nothing while the second one goes to Rockstar Game Launcher and proceeds to complain that it couldn't connect properly to Epic...
Hope steam will block all integrations with epicfail store soon.
They're doing nothing, but destroying PC gaming again. Tim noted they leaved PC because of piracy and console was future of gaming, but after 10 years he returned back, if PCs suck so much,why don't put your storefront on the PS5 instead? where 70/30 is standart and even launcher charges a monthly usage fee to play online?
Or instead of making exclusives to your trash launcher, why not improve it a little bit? Indie stores at day one has much more function than Epic after 2 years, no achievemnts for gaming platform and even no forum, so people have to use steam forums instead xD they don't even have shopping cart, groups, controller/vr support or any extra feature, and launcher is down or has different issues almost every day. that's how your 88/12 works for customers...
But he stated many times he hates PC, so who cares? not surprised his entire business model is all about exclusivity, like consoles.
Absolutely agree with you. Except maybe for the first statement about blocking Epic. I think it would be more professional and mature for Valve to keep a neutral stance on this instead of joining in on Sweeney's childish games.
And do you remember how Tim was ranting when Microsoft introduced their Store and UWP apps, claiming they'd go all exclusive then?

It seams that I could get the controller to work, but I need to change the game key binding, instead of the steam one. I steam binding just won't make any effect on the game. It will give me some work, but will be ok in the end, I think.
(Every variant of wine/proton may not work for your game, you would have to check protondb for workarounds/suggestions from other gamers: Grand Theft Auto V)
You may have to use different versions of wine/proton for your game to work, like proton-experimental, proton-ge, stable proton provided by valve etc.
As of when this post was last edited, this guide is quite outdated; the Heroic Launcher has improved a lot, and so has the overall gaming experience in Linux.
It would be a lot easier for you to get started with gaming on Linux.
Hi! Thank you for reply! I deleted proton-ge-custom from program install manager, then I deleted all files from /home/vigilante/.wine/, but there is no .proton folder in my home directory. I chose proton-proton-experimental in game settings (I chose it earlier) and tried again. Game didn't started, but error log changed a little. Here it is:
