'.it manages to portray teenage life brilliantly in a way which adults would
struggle to relate to.' The Guardian
The newly established Ubiquity Theatre Company set out on their objective to
bring new audiences into Birmingham's theatres with an exciting new
stage-adaption of this classic 80's bratpack movie - the film that related
to so many teenagers anxieties in an era of leg-warmers, grey skies and
Margaret Thatcher!
"...and these children, that you spit on as they try to change their worlds,
are immune to your consultations. They're quite aware of what they're going
through..." David Bowie.
When five students are thrown together by a Saturday morning detention -
they begin to see each other apart from their stereotypes: Andrew the jock,
Brian the geek, John the criminal, Claire the Prom Queen and Allison the
psycho. Each finds qualities about the others that make this Saturday
morning change their lives.
"You see us as you want to see us: in the simplest terms, in the most
convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a
brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal." taken
from The Breakfast Club.
An energetic cast work within a company holding an ethos of developing
skills within the local community while looking to attract new audiences.
They'll bring the eighties back to life - so come to re-live those hazy
memories of leather ties and power-suits; arrive in fancy dress (if you
dare!) to feel part of the experience; or watch with gritted teeth while you
finally expel those ghosts of perms, pessimism. and Kylie & Jason.
