Introduction:
In the interests of harmony and user benefit, please read and adhere to the
following information.
Adherence to this Charter will help to prevent any postings, whether
intentional or not, that may impede the interests and enjoyment of your
fellow users.
1 - Please read *before* you post:
Please read recent postings (guideline = the previous seven days postings)
to check whether your query has already been answered.
Another user may have asked the same question/query and it may have already
been answered.
Posting a duplicate query normally has the following effect:
(i) the download time for every user increases;
(ii) disk space is taken up unnecessarily;
(iii) you will annoy other users;
(iv) it will take you longer to find a resolution.
2 - Having checked recent postings and found that your query has not already
been answered, please state clearly the exact problem that is occurring
along with any error messages you receive.
3 - Please refrain from cross posting to the ntl.* newsgroups:
The group names clearly determine the purpose of each ntl.* newsgroup so
please do not cross post. Cross posting does not serve any useful purpose.
4 - Please do not post binary files to the ntl.* newsgroups:
There are dedicated hierarchies for binaries (file types such as mpegs,
jpegs etc) of every kind, alt.binaries.* being the all time favourite.
Posting binaries in to the ntl.* newsgroups is not acceptable. Binary
postings will seriously impede the download times for your fellow users.
If you need to include traceroute evidence, for example, please be sure to
save it to a text file before posting it! Posting binaries such as visual
trace picture attachments will not be regarded as acceptable netiquette by
your fellow users and you may provoke a negative response for it.
5 - Please post using plain text or Uuencode only. *Do not post using HTML*:
Some users prefer to utilise a news reader that only reads plain text. HTML
is also slower to download than plain text or Uuencode so please bear in
mind the interests of your fellow users.
It is standard practice to post in plain text when using the ntl.*
Newsgroups.
6 - Please do not use profanity:
Be considerate, and think about who may be reading your post. Our
readership includes children, other users and ntl support staff who may be
offended by the use of this language.
For further information please see Section 2 of
http://www.ntlworld.com/legals/user-policy.htm
The use of expletives will inevitably result in the removal of the offending
post by AUP and may result in an official letter from our AUP Team (and
possible disconnection). The breach of any other section of our User Policy
may also result in action being taken by the ntl AUP Team.
7 - ntl.support.newsgroup-requests newsgroup has been removed. Newsgroup
requests may now be requested by e-mailing newsgroup...@ntlworld.com.
When requesting a newsgroup to be added please ensure that it is spelt
correctly.
When we put forward a group for addition we need to check that it exists on
other Usenet news servers. This is usually done via a search on
groups.google.com and by searching the list supplied by Internet Software
Consortium - ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/CONFIG/ or for uk.* newsgroups
www.usenet.org.uk/checkgroups. Your request may be unsuccessful if you
provide us with the incorrect spelling/case.
The full name of the newsgroup you are requesting must be in the *body* of
your mail and not in the subject line.
We are unable to accept requests for newsgroup hierarchies. Please request
each individual newsgroup within the hierarchy you wish to be added.
We are unable to request newsgroups within the following hierarchies, as
they will automatically be added if carried by our peers: comp, humanities,
misc, news, rec, sci, soc, talk, uk, scot, wales, microsoft, gnu.
8 - Non-compliance:
Users need to be aware that breaches of The Charter may result in the
involvement of the ntl Acceptable Use Policy Team (the team that enforces
the ntl Terms and Conditions and User Policy).
The ntl.* hierarchy is a closed hierarchy (ie IP restricted) and is not to
be redistributed or mirrored via email lists, web pages or private news
servers (other than for distribution to an internal private network).
This charter applies to all of the ntl.* newsgroups.
We look forward to your co-operation and support with the contents of the
ntl.* Newsgroup Charter.
Regards,
The ntl: Acceptable Use Policy Team.
