Crosstalk issues, or MIDI Rocker issues?

Hey everyone,

I started playing Rock Band 3 yesterday (sidenote; Pro mode is awesome.) and I noticed that on certain songs I couldn't get a streak going. Specifically on sections where the blue or green cymbal is combined with a yellow, blue or green tom. Today I started diagnosing the issue a bit and right now I'm stuck, so I was hoping someone here could help me out. Sorry if it's going to be a long story :)

I hooked up the MIDI Rocker to the GUI and first confirmed that all my settings were correct. Only the blue cymbal has two MIDI notes assigned to it, so that it works with the hi-hat pedal, all are unique MIDI notes. For reference, a screenshot: http://bit.ly/fWKdXp

Next I confirmed that alternating between, for example, the yellow tom and blue cymbal works correctly. As this screenshot shows, it work beautifully: http://bit.ly/eXzLeX

Then I started hitting the yellow tom and blue cymbal simultaneously, and things started getting weird. The yellow cymbal is shown to be "hit", but even stranger; sometimes the yellow tom doesn't show up as a hit at all, only the yellow cymbal. Waterfall screenshot of 3 hits: http://bit.ly/gXNbSN

My first reaction was that it must be an issue with the drums, since I had to play with the sensitivity a lot in the early days to correct for vibrations in the kit. If the drums are sending out these notes, I assume they would show up in the MIDI Logging. However, no matter how many times I hit the offending combinations, they almost always show up wrong in the waterfall, but the MIDI log is always clean (sidenote; it would be nice to be able to have both enabled at the same time, switching tabs turns off MIDI logging now). Screenshot: http://bit.ly/fQcNIM

I tried physically disconnecting the yellow cymbal, and it still shows up in the waterfall. I upgraded the firmware to the 9.2 beta, no change in this behaviour (some screenshots show the original 3.8, but I have confirmed them in 9.2). Is there anything else I can test to figure out where the issue is? The data so far suggests to me the kit is sending out the correct MIDI signals, but I'm not pointing fingers yet...

By the way, the kit I'm using is a Medeli dd602 V2; you get what you pay for, but it's been reliable enough for playing Rock Band for a few years now.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Mark-

I've been away for past few days and will look into this in detail in the next day or two. I may send you a test version of firmware with more diagnostics to help track down the problem. Thanks for all the detailed info!

Mark -

It looks like there is a bug in the software that does the "waterfall"
display in the software. I've been able to reproduce this problem and
am fixing it --- I should have a new version ready tomorrow (Dec 28).

This should then help you to further diagnose the original issue. I
haven't found any problems in the firmware so far.

I wish everyone a great New Year!

A new version of the Windows software for the MIDI Rocker (all
versions) is available for downloading at http://www.bytearts.com/beta/beta.htm.
This fixes problems with the "Drum Test" screen and the waterfall
display. Basically, if you hit some combinations of pads and cymbals
at the same time, you would get some strange results in the old
version of the software.

I'm working on some more improvements as well to make it work better
when testing maps for the different games (Rock Band or Guitar Hero)
-- right now, if you are trying to use the Drum Test screen to for
testing and the MIDI Rocker isn't in the same game mode as what you
are testing, you will get some strange results.

Hi Scott,

like I said in my mail, thanks a lot for the quick response, I will
give the new version a try and see if I can narrow it down this time.
I was gonna do that today, but then I got the Keytar as an unexpected
present, so my priorities shifted slightly :)

This message also confirms I can once again post in this group, thank
you for fixing that too!

Scott,

the fixed waterfall display works like a treat. I ran the same test
scenarios and it all looks fine now, so I changed the timeout to 50 ms
(think I read that somewhere) and I'll be running the in-game
calibration again to see if I can pinpoint the issue. The kit and MIDI
Rocker are working properly though, thanks for the help!

In case it helps anyone else here is a similar issue I had and
resolved.

I would break streaks from time to time while hitting yellow cymbal +
snare. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on.

If I increased the threshold the issue would clear up but then I have
to hit everything harder.

Long story short... The high hat cymbal was too loose. If you hit it
a certain way you'd get a soft extra note caused by the cymbal moving
around on it's stand.

A little twist on the wing nut and no more issues.
