notation on manuscripts

Hi collective wisdom,

 

I’ve been seeing a notation on a number of manuscripts which looks like كاكم and I’ve been happily glossing over it as insignificant for cataloging purposes, but it has been eating away at me.  What is it?  It is starting to become an obsession – if you know, please put me out of my misery!
