Upcoming Event! The Palestine Exception: Censorship in Academic Libraries
Thursday, April 10th 3pm PST / 6pm EST
In a collaboration between Librarians and Archivists with Palestine
(LAP) and Library Freedom Project (LFP), we explore the role of academic
libraries and information workers in the advocacy for Palestinian human
rights and the relentless efforts to silence these voices. Although
censorship of Palestinian solidarity is occurring in practically every
industry today, colleges and universities have been ground zero in the
battle between Palestine advocacy and criticism of Israel. Exploring
“the Palestine Exception” within academic libraries, we will investigate
the history and economic ties that helped create the current situation.
We will hear experiences from librarians around the world on the
censorship they’ve experienced related to any action considered
pro-Palestine. Lastly, advice about unions and their role in protecting
members will be shared. As the Library Bill of Rights on censorship
states, “Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of
their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment” – let’s
gather and discuss why this is not happening when it comes to Palestine.
